No Facetime over cellular network for iPhone 4 or iPad 2

No doubt iPhone 4S user are very pleased that Apple has revealed what iOS 6 will bring in the way of new features; however unfortunately there are some features that will not work or will be neutered on older iOS devices, and this includes the FaceTime app working over a cellular connection.

According to the guys over at Phone Arena, obviously the new Flyover feature wont work on the iPhone 4 as it has a single core processor, and the new Siri navigation will only work on the iPhone 4S and the new iPad because they are the only devices to feature Siri.

As for the new FaceTime working over a cellular network rather than WiFi, will it appears that this will also be kept from the iPhone 4 and earlier iOS slates, as Apple has announced “FaceTime over a cellular network requires iPhone 4S or iPad (3rd generation) with cellular data capability. Carrier data charges may apply. FaceTime is not available in all countries.”

So there you have it, basically if you don’t own an iPhone 4S or a new iPad you wont be able to use FaceTime video chat over a cellular connection and will have to stick with FaceTime over WiFi. It’s not clear why Apple has decided to neuter FaceTime over 3G/4G networks, but the guys suggest it could be something to do with performance.

Does not being able to use FaceTime over a cellular connection on an iPhone 4 or Apple iPad 2 make any owner want to upgrade to a newer iOS device, or are you not too bothered about using FaceTime over WiFi only?

I have had an iPhone 4 since last summer and have not managed tHo make a FaceTime call using either 3G or wifi. How do I make a FaceTime call?

You have to enable FaceTime in settings first. Then find someone in your contacts that has FaceTime and click FaceTime on their contact.

Pretty messed up considering when the iPhone 4 first came out FaceTime was advertised as if it would be getting used over cellular VERY soon. They even said for the first year it’s only wifi because of the carriers. Now looking back the iPhone 4 it was introduced on will never get the feature as they advertised it would years ago.
