Windows Phone 8 due to be announced ahead of release

There are some analysts that believe that given time the Windows Phone platform will become a major force in the smartphone market, and even take market share away from both Android and the iPhone, and today Windows Phone 8 is due to be announced.

Microsoft have been busy as the company recently announced its new Surface tablets that are coming to an already crowded market, and now according to AppleInsider Microsoft is tipped to reveal its plans for Windows Phone 8 today. The company is hosting a two day developer summit in San Francisco with topics tipped to range from multi-core CPU support to better device integration across the platform.

This event was announced around a month ago and the company has been quiet about what to expect, but it is clear that Microsoft will be concentrating on its mobile operating system as the invites that were sent out came from Microsoft’s Windows Phone arm.

There are many sources that are suggesting that the company will announce Windows Phone 8, which is widely expected to offer support multi-core processors, and this is a step up from the current singe core units that are currently used in devices such as Nokia’s Lumia range. As developers play an important role in writing the multi-threading code used to deploy software on multi-core hardware, the topic is likely to be spoken about.

It is thought the basic Windows Phone 8 UI will be pretty similar to the current Windows Phone 7, but the core operating system kernels will be completely different. It is also being claimed that NFC support will be announced that is similar to Androids Google Wallet service, but the exact features of the next version of the Windows Phone platform are not known until an official announcement by the company has been made.

Will you be considering a Windows Phone handset in the future?

I considered a windows phone in the past.  I bought the Lumia 800 and am extremely pleased with it.

I have yet to meet someone with a Nokia Lumia series who isn’t.

Then again, I also have yet to meet someone who has a Nokia (full stop) and isn’t pleased with it 😛

But windows phone most certainly is a great OS.  No doubt about that.
