Google Doodle inspires Gustav Klimt iOS apps

The eagle-eyed among you will have spotted that today there is a special Google Doodle to commemorate what would have been artist Gustav Klimt’s 150th birthday. We enjoy bringing news on these occasional Doodles on Google’s homepage, which often mark special events or people. As today’s honors Gustav Klimt we thought it might be apt to round up a few iOS apps about the great man as inspiration.

Austrian Gustav Klimt was born on July 14, 1862 and died on February 6, 1918 from a stroke due to an influenza epidemic. He was a member of the Vienna Secession movement and famed for his erotic art, which was often adorned with gold leaf as illustrated by today’s Google Doodle, which spells out the letters of Google in such a style. A very highly rated app simply called Gustav Klimt is on the iOS platform and compatible for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad running iOS 3.0 or later. It’s a free app and tells how the female body was a primary subject of Klimt’s and how some of his best works include the Head of Holofernes, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, and The Kiss. Features include 45 of Klimt’s paintings with detailed views and information, a biography of Klimt, paintings slide show and the ability to set paintings as wallpapers. Those who want to download this app must be aged 17 or older.

Alternatively another iOS app is called Paintings: Gustav Klimt and this is priced at $0.99 and compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad running iOS 3.2 or later. This app has plenty of detail about the Austrian Symbolist painter and features more than 100 paintings by Klimt. The app details how Klimt often used gold or gold-colored decoration in his works and how one of the most dominant themes for his paintings, murals and sketches was the femme fatale. This is also an extremely highly rated app.

Another app we have for your consideration is Gustav Klimt Virtual Art Gallery. This one is $0.99 and for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad running iOS 2.2 or later. Bringing some of Klimt’s greatest works to your mobile device, this app has 39 high-quality renderings of his paintings and the use of two modes. User can opt for The Virtual Gallery mode to click quickly through the artwork or the Thumbnail Gallery mode to choose which to view. This one is rated a 12+ because of infrequent/mild sexual content or nudity.

For something a little different there’s also the Klimt Jigsaw app priced at $0.99 and suitable for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad running iOS 3.2 or later. This tells how Klimt’s paintings are among some of the most expensive in the art world right now with the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer 1 currently priced at $150 million while the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer 2 is currently price at $99 million. This allows you to view a painting while in between playing the puzzle and has an on-screen progress bar. Any painting from the gallery can be selected and you can also use time settings. Once you’ve solved the puzzle you can use the hammer to break it up again. This app is a good way of seeing Klimt’s art whilst also enjoying a little light entertainment.
