Earlier this year saw the wider availability of the Raspberry Pi that was developed in the UK with the aim of stimulating the education of basic computer science in schools, and today we have news of the Gooseberry Android board that has more power than the Raspberry Pi.

Since it was released the Raspberry Pi has certainly made some waves according to an article on SlashGear, and recently we reported on a Korean company offering a similar board with a quad core processor as well. Now though another affordable rival is available in the shape of the Gooseberry Android board.

This features a 1GHz processor that can be overclocked to 1.5GHz, a Mali-400 GPU, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of built in storage, and a microSD card port that can offer up to 32GB of extra storage. The Gooseberry Android board also runs on Ice Cream Sandwich and can easily handle 1080p video playback as well as other basic browsing tasks, and lighter gameplay.

Connection wise there is a microUSB port and a mini HDMI port, and it has three physical hardware buttons that control the likes of volume and power. Where the Gooseberry has the advantage compared to the Raspberry Pi is in its power and performance, and the later architecture means it can run Ubuntu as well.

It’s not all good though as it doesn’t have a LAN port, only Wi-Fi, and more importantly it doesn’t have the same sort of community behind it, but this won’t matter much when you realize the price of the board, as it will cost only £40 in the UK. Shipping is believed to begin in the next two to six weeks, and The store only has a small number available at the time of writing.
