HTC Desire HD Android ICS update uncertainty: Updated

Users of the Android platform are still experiencing the dreaded fragmentation of the operating system, as Google are just beginning to upgrade some devices to Android Jelly Bean many are still waiting to be shown some Ice Cream Sandwich love, and now there is some uncertainty for the HTC Desire HD Android ICS update.

Last week we told you about the fact that Canadian carrier TELUS had stated the update for the Desire HD had been cancelled, but then we had reports that the official Facebook page was still listing the handset as getting the update. Android Central are reporting that a few days ago HTC told them the Desire HD and the Desire S were still in line for the upgrade, but since then more information has come to light.

TELUS has stated that it was HTC that informed them that the update had been suspended, and it was a company decision that was unrelated to the carrier’s network, testing, or software. The carrier also said that if HTC were to go ahead with the Ice Cream Sandwich update they would gladly test it before releasing it to customers.

HTC have been contacted again about the issue, and released a slightly worrying statement that hinted that the company were still testing the handsets ability to run the software.

The company stated that they are “committed to providing the best customer experience on our devices and are currently determining the ability to support Ice Cream Sandwich on the HTC Desire HD. We’ll provide more information when we’ve completed our analysis”.

So going on this statement makes you think the HTC Desire HD ICS update is still hanging in the balance, and the company is busy trying to get the software on the handset without ruining the user experience. This could also be bad news for owners of the Desire S and Thunderbolt that both carry similar internals to the Desire HD.

Some of our readers that own the Desire HD have rooted their device and are running an unofficial version of ICS, and have reported no issues running it on the handset, so hopefully this will mean the upgrade eventually coming to the device.

Update: its bad news folks as HTC have released the following statement about the Android ICS upgrade.

“After extensive testing, HTC has determined that the current version of HTC Sense with Android provides customers with the best experience on the HTC Desire HD. When we consider new versions of software, we weigh a number of factors, but ultimately the customer experience on the product is the deciding factor. We apologize for any confusion this change may have caused our customers.”

Do you think the Desire HD will be upgraded to ICS?

My company was going to purchase 500 HTC One X’s for our sales guys as I’m the tech buyer and I use a Desire HD for work. But now this from them, disgusting! Looks like we’ll go elsewhere.
