No ICS update for LG Optimus 2X

If you are an owner of the LG Optimus 2X smartphone, you are probably quite fed up with all the confusion as to whether the LG Optimus 2X will ever see an update to Android Ice Cream Sandwich, considering LG has previously said the Optimus 2X would not gain ICS, and then stating the ICS update for the device was actually being tested.

However, according to the guys over at Phone Arena by way of Android Greed, it appears that the LG Optimus 2X will definitely not be gaining the Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, as LG Canada posted such to their Twitter page.

Just why the Android smartphone wont be seeing the ICS update seems a bit of a mystery as the LG Optimus 2X does sport 512MB RAM along with a 1.2GHz Tegra 2 dual core processor, and as such is more than capable of handling Ice Cream Sandwich, and as the guys point out, the Sony Xperia Tipo sports an 800MHz single core processor, but still runs Android 4.0.

There’s no real statement from LG as to why they have decided not to update the LG Optimus 2X, but perhaps it is because the company is concentrating on promoting their newer devices, including some that already run ICS out of the box.

But it would appear that if you do happen to own an LG Optimus 2X, don’t expect to see Ice Cream Sandwich playing nice on your device unless you install an unofficial ROM of course.

That’s not what LG support told me yesterday, I received this from them ‘I would like to advise that the Ice Cream Sandwich update will be available from September, unfortunately we do not have an official date for the release as of yet. Please continue to check our website and blog for any news concerning future updates. ‘

I have emailed LG support today to confirm if these rumours are true, this is the response I got
‘I can advise you that Detailed information regarding the ICS OS upgrade in the UK and Ireland will be updated later.”

Not sure what that means, looks like we are stuck with 2.3 though, think this is completely wrong and this was the reason I moved away from Samsung now I’m going to avoid LG

You cant just put a android 4.0 rom onto the phone, the drivers for the GPU and HA is not available open source, the dev’s working on it cant find a way to use the current hardware without Nvidia’s support. .. so basically unless an official update with all the needed drivers and code get released with it, the O2x will be stuck on 2.3.7, or if you do update to an unofficial 4.0 Rom, your left with software acceleration only, which does not use the full power of the phone.

its a shame, i hope some good news will come of all this in the near future.

I’ll be happy using my unofficial 2.3.7 Rom, its fast stable, no lag, battery lasts about 3-4 days with average use. its a fantastic phone. but LG are not interested in helping folk, there like any other company, .. thinking on how to line their pockets.

I have made a formal complaint to LG today, they have told me that they are passing it to hq, so I very much doubt anything will be done, there support team have now told me that they have no information if it will be released, complete joke …. I only bought the phone in April

I’m extremely disappointed. This was their flagship less than a year before ICS was released. But that’s old technology enough to forget about that phone, their money is made with that, why bother?

How about keeping customers? We’ve been lured into new technology prowess (first dual core phone to hit the market) to then be left aside like if we had chosen the cheapest piece of hardware.

I will make sure to follow articles on new LG phones and comment on how unreliable LG is with updates, to help new customers not to be fooled like I was. Being lazy should not be deemed profitable.
