Samsung Galaxy Note 2 pitted against Thomson X-View 2

We’ve been closely following all the news regarding the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, a smartphone sometimes described as a phablet because of its large display. Some of our recent posts have attracted a large amount of interest and comments so we know that many people are waiting to get their hands on this Samsung beast. However the Galaxy Note 2 has now been pitted against the Thomson X-View 2 and we’ll take a look to see if the X-View 2 offers any credible competition.

Until now we have considered the Galaxy Note 2 would be up against competition such as the upcoming Motorola Droid RAZR HD, the Sony Xperia TX and of course for those who may venture away from an Android phone, the Apple iPhone 5 running iOS 6. Now though the Thomson X-View 2 has also landed in the mix and may just give consumers more to think about, especially as it’s another smartphone with a ‘phablet’ sized display. The Galaxy Note 2 is expected to be revealed at an IFA Berlin event on August 29 and the Thomson X-View 2 is also expected to be unveiled at IFA so the two may go head-on against each other. Specs and features on both are not yet official and so are unconfirmed but we can take a look at rumored information on each to compare the two.

Some of the specs and features on the Galaxy Note 2 are expected to be a 1.5GHz quad-core Exynos processor, 5.5-inch flexible AMOLED display with 1280 x 720 resolution, 1.5GB of RAM, 16 or 32GB of internal storage expandable via microSD, a 13-megapixel camera, LTE connectivity and S Pen stylus. The display beats the size of its predecessor, the original Galaxy Note, which had a 5.3-inch screen. We’re unsure of whether the Galaxy Note will launch on Android 4.0 ICS or 4.1 Jelly Bean but of course the later the release date the more likely it will come tasting of Jelly Bean, which would be a big selling factor.

We know that many of our readers are already sold on the Galaxy Note 2 but we’ll throw in the idea of the Thomson X-View 2 to give you something to think about. This comes from Thomson, a company that is based in France according to IBT, and is better known for set-top boxes. This is its first venture into phablet territory and some of the specs and features for the X-View 2 include a 1GHz MT6570 processor and Adreno 220 graphics, a 5.3-inch display with resolution of 480 x 800, 512MB of RAM and 1GB of ROM expandable with microSD card, all running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. IBTimes also tells how the Thomson X-View 2 will have dual-SIM capability, two separate SIMS with easy switching between the two.

Both offerings will give those who like a larger display something to think about with both having screens of 5.3-inches or over but on the face of it, if the majority of these rumored specs and features are accurate then the Galaxy Note 2 should walk it with its higher-end specs. It looks likely to have a far superior processor, camera, internal storage and higher resolution display but of course we should point out again that this is based on unofficial specs so far. Also much of smartphone choice comes down to personal preference of design and until the official unveilings we can’t be sure what either will look like.

We’ll be following developments with both of these phones and of course will keep you informed as we hear more. Certainly so far though it looks as though the Thomson X-View 2 won’t give the Galaxy Note 2 anything to worry about but we’d like to hear your views on this. Is there anything about what we think we know so far about the X-View 2 that could sway you to purchase it over the Galaxy Note 2? Maybe you’re more sold than ever on the Galaxy Note 2 and can’t wait for it to hit the shelves? Let us know with your comments.

Thoughts? After reading the expected specs of each, I’d say the X-View’s targeted competition would be flip phones, not the Note 2. Obviously, I’m being facetious, but this phone is no competition for the Note 2. At least, not in the eyes of this prospective buyer.

x-view is retarded and composed entirely of human excrement – I heard an old woman say this at the bus stop this morning. I wonder if she is right?

Personally, Note 2 is on top of my list for phones to buy this year. This View-2 or what ever it is called, is probably a good mix in the phone industry. But come on? To be honest, having the success of the S3 definitely gives the note 2 a massive head start in all ways possible.

I’ve had the original Galaxy Note since it first came out and I LOVE it. I bought it for the large screen and fell in love with the S pen as well. I can’t imagine any device that doesn’t have the capability to write with a small tipped stylus like the S pen as being any kind of competition for the Galaxy Note no matter the size of the screen. The Note 2 will be the only competition for the original Note. Not sure I need to upgrade to it, looking forward to hearing your review on the Note 2 after it’s announced.
