Rushed Nokia Lumia 920 comes with problems
Nokia and Microsoft may be hoping for big things for the upcoming Nokia Lumia 920 that will run on the new Windows Phone 8 operating system. It was revealed last week in a joint event and a blaze of publicity but has received a rather mixed reception. It may have been better if Nokia and Microsoft had taken more time over the launch though, as a recent report suggests that rushing the Nokia Lumia 920 out has brought problems.
Although the Lumia range is stylish we have already noted that the new Lumia 920 that so many were expecting big things of, somehow seems to lack the wow factor. Nokia and Microsoft could have made a big mistake introducing the Lumia 920 early as the press event lacked those all important details that consumers most want to hear, a release date and price (although we’ve since heard rumors). It’s likely that Nokia and Microsoft felt rushed into the big reveal of the Lumia because of the impending announcement at an Apple event on Wednesday September 12 that will introduce the iPhone 5. We all know that an iPhone launch is one of the biggest moments of the technology calendar and so you can understand that Nokia may have wanted to get the Lumia 920 some publicity before the iPhone 5 launch overshadowed it.
However this could have backfired for Nokia and Microsoft as being too hasty with an unveiling event for the Lumia 920 may have put off some potential customers, especially when not enough information regarding essential details was forthcoming. Indeed PC World refers to the premature debut of the Lumia 920 as a “public relations black eye” and makes the good point that rushing out its announcement before Apple looks rather desperate, rather than a move “from competitors who feel confident that their latest product meets or beats whatever Apple can bring to market.”
The lack of release date and pricing for the Lumia 920 could be a real error on the part of Nokia and Microsoft as one thing we’re sure to hear at the new iPhone announcement is full details of availability and price. If there’s one thing consumers don’t like it’s hanging around waiting for these details for an upcoming product and they could easily be tempted to another device that they have full information for.
Another problem from the rushed launch was a demo of photos and videos, which were purported to have been taken with the Lumia 920 but were later found to have been faked. Nokia issued a statement regarding this admitting that the video “simulates what we will be able to deliver with OIS (optical image stabilization),” and conceded that it should have posted a disclaimer. However this is likely to cause another problem for the Lumia 920, as consumers never like to feel as though they’ve been duped and it could dent confidence in the product. The sad part of this is that faking videos and photos needn’t have happened as tests carried out by The Verge after this became public knowledge found that the Lumia 920 camera with its PureView technology out-performed other top-notch handsets it was compared with.
It’s a real shame then that as stylish-looking as the Lumia 920 is, trust in the product and the desire to buy could have been dented by hurrying out its first showing. We may never be able to tell just how many sales many have been lost because of this but it seems more than likely that at least some consumers will look elsewhere because the debut of the Lumia 920 was tarnished.

i thik the 920 is a brilliant phone and smashes all other competiters i will be upgrading to one when my contract is up for renewal in three months time by then all the bulls**t i have been reading about its early launch excetera excetera nokia phones fully rock i believe in them go go go.
Hey, I’m still going to give it a go, especially following the news that EE in the UK will more than likely be selling it as one of the first 4G units. I must admit the whole process has been an utter shambles though. Nokia have not projected an image of professionalism.

FYI, Nokia set the data months ago, and not a couple of weeks ago (like Apple did).
Contract out end of October. Switching to 3… unfortunately 920 being released to EE (formerly orange/ t-mobile) so may have to wait. Wasn’t precisly waiting for 920, but waiting for WP8. At the end of the day, the 920 will actually be a good phone as opposed to smoke and mirrors, because that’s what Nokia does.
Dude, don’t go to Three. It’s the worst network. Bad coverage, no 2G!! I have a Three contract and have complained many times. I took out a 2nd contract on T-Mobile and it’s the best
who writes this junk???? “somehow seems to lack the wow factor”…of what let me guess?..an iPhone? demo video and photos taken directly from the lumia were shown during the presentation as well, i guess you werent paying attention. as i understand it the hardware is finished..it is WP8 that has caused the delay. get a new hobby (i cant call this a job, you havent done it).
I have read around 20 articles and watched around 20 hands on reviews comparing Nokia Lumia 920 with other devices and I found the device no less than Iphone or Samsung S3. Actualy its beter than both in so many ways, I would say its a unique product and a very good evolutionary output from Nokia and Microsoft..

What i was unable to digest is the ‘Major interest and Intention of Media’ to put down the productivity and excitement nokia is comming up, with their BAD PUBLICITY Stunts.
You call it the negative talk of investors or fake advertise. Does it really matters for a customer who is willing to buy the phone depending on the satisfaction and user experience. ‘Look at the Bright Side’. They are giving the best camera experience, the best touch, the best screen size which is feasible to hold in you hand properly. “they are giving their best”. Windows 8 is giving their best. no one is rushing to show off their new phones. If at all they do, its not bad at all when they are having a better and performing product in hand. You take such a pleasure in showing the dent on the chasis of Nokia but u do not talk about the Vehicle. A small dent can ruin the look, But not the Engine.
Why is there a crazy ism even in the media towards Apple or samsung. There is nothing wrong talking and telling something good about them. But biasing your reviews and pushing a good product down the drain is not a way of journalism. You are ruining the hard work of not so fancy stuntmen like Nokia. Why is there no support for the less fancy. Does only Apple Iphone 5 sells your story. Or I should ask the ‘Media’ one more question. ” Do you get paid by hours or words?”
I am not a butt hurt fan of Nokia trying to support them. I am telling the truth. Go check youtube comments, Every one likes it. Check comments in any review given by media, Everyone likes Nokia Lumia 920 more than Iphone 5.
I truly regret today that world has come to such a time than all Media wants to show is what ‘people’ want to see. I am not talking about people like me. This is not real journalism. This is prostitution Journalism.

One of the worst reviews(preview?) I’ve ever read, I’ll be getting a 920 on day of release. Fastest refresh rate on any phone, most sensitive screen of any phone, better than retina resolution, best lowlight smartphone camera, the only phone with optical image stabilisation, wireless charging, 720p front facing, 1080p rear cameras. 10hrs battery, curved screen glass, wp8 with directX 11, windows 8 kernal, IE10, updated tellme APIs, Nokia maps GPS. if apple announced this we’d hear about it for the next 5 years. but Nokia will do its best and I will have the best phone currently available… I will take one thing from your review and that is to never see you in the light of a tech journalists, you should review your career.
The “Wow” factor it lacks is that Microsoft has been hyping about what the phone looks, but not what the phone is able to do. How many apps are there. Does it have voice recognition, etc. Yes the specs are great and much better than I would say the Apple iPhone 5. What does WP 8 do? Look at Apples presentation, it shows what the OS is able to do, not much more than the 4s, but the plan was set out. I would like to know what their Ecosystem is going to be like. Is this in place yet? Yes it is a prettyn phone, it might be the best picture taker, and the specs are great. Now tell me. Whay can it do?
Windows 8 is a tile based interface where you have information on tiles rather than clicking on an icon and then going to the information. Voice recognition? LOL mate! In SIRI you can talk to the phone but in WINDOWS 8 you can TALK TO INDIVIDUAL APPS. What do you expect it to do if not (1) take better pics (2) have a faster access to information (3) have better voice guided maps (4) transfer pics and files wirelessly with NFC (5) make payments via NFC (6) Charge wirelessly… I could go on and on and on… WHAT THE F do you want it to do? Time travel?
I was not aware that you could talk to the individual apps. Thanks for some clarification. I wonder if you can text by talking? I here mostly no, but some say that is a definite. The technology is there,

Far better then Iphone 5 on specs & overall and up here in Nordic climate it will work much better in -20 degrees, I don’t care about all bullshit apps the main function of either ordinary or smartphones is phone functionality and new thinking !
It might have been hurried, but the Nokia Lumia 920 is still a great phone. I was waiting for the iPhone 5 to release but when it did, I was disappointed. surprisingly, the iPhone5 lacked a “wow” factor. Sure it has a bigger screen and a faster processor but that is EXPECTED from any new phone.
However, after that I’ve been checking out the nokia lumia 920 almost everyday and I have my heart set on the phone.
For me, this is how it goes! iOs > Windows Phone > Android.
Samsung can come up with how many ever cheap plastic “so-thin-you-can-hide-it-in-ur-butt-crack” phones they want but i’m never going to buy one of them. Even the Ativ S is basically and android phone with the home button removed and the windows button put it its place. SAMSUNG LACK INNOVATION.

This is an awful “article” – I’m truly ashamed that I have read it and now am commenting on it. The worst part is “We may never be able to tell just how many sales many have been lost ” – you can’t prove a negative and so the “may” is redundant and serves only to underline the pretension of knowledge and expertise Mark Chubb has.
The citing of a PC World article which is then rehashed here is also unforgivable and the very worst kind of technology reporting that gives the internet a bad name.
The lack of “wow” factor is also lazy and a matter of perception. I might decide that there’s not much wow factor about any piece of new technology be it Samsung, Nokia or Apple – newsworthy no.
I’m so deeply ashamed to be still typing this and giving more thought to the article than the author did.
Leaving out the launch date and price for a new market leading spec phone is annoying but forgivable. Launching the new iphone with a spec worse than a samsung s2 is not.
Thanks for the article, but keep in mind, an informed customer is a customer for life. Though pricing and release dates are vague, the features are enough to get me to switch from android to windows 8. I am into photography and wanting a cell phone with a darned good p&s camera! But more importantly, for anyone to switch to a Windows phone, there has to be that WOW factor and Nokia has teased us with that. I thought about the iphone 5, but decided to hold off until Nokia 920 is out. I am willing to wait and guess what, if the Nokia does not pan out, no loss! There are other fish in the sea or I can wait until next year. I think the WOW factor will be when we all upgrade to Windows 8 and then we will see the benefit of getting a phone to go along with our desktops and then soon afterwards, windows 8 tablets. There will be enough marketshare for Windows, Android, and Apple.. but Apple needs to let go of some of that pie!
Erm, so, the “problems” with the phone are that release date and pricing weren’t announced, and that some marketing company screwed up a commercial? This is a terrible article.
