Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Nokia Lumia 920 fight club

One of the biggest smartphone hits of the year is the Samsung Galaxy S3 (S III) and this Android phone has won a lot of fans. However after the recent Apple win over Samsung in patent litigation there are concerns because Apple is seeking to add the Galaxy S3 to the list of Android hardware under dispute. With this in mind some people may consider one of the new handsets on the way that will run on the new Windows Phone 8 operating system from Microsoft. Nokia has just announced its flagship Lumia 920 phone and many are now comparing these two handsets so today we thought we’d take a look at the Samsung Galaxy S3 vs. Nokia Lumia 920 fight club.

We told yesterday how the Nokia Lumia 920 has met with a rather mixed reception after a rather bungled launch but it seems that plenty of those in the know feel that there’s a lot to admire about the Lumia 920. Thus comparisons between it and the Galaxy S3 are popping up at a rate of knots and today we thought we’d peruse a few articles to get an overall idea of what’s being said. Firstly Mobile & Apps have come up with a useful specs roundup between the two phones and it seems sensible to start off with the relevant specs and features for both handsets.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is available now and has a 1.4GHz Exynos quad-core processor (some regions), 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display with resolution of 1280 x 720, 2GB of RAM (some regions) and 16/32 or 64GB of internal storage expandable via microSD. There’s also an 8-megapixel rear camera, 1.9-megapixel front-facing shooter, 2100mAh battery for up to 11.6 hours of 3G talk time and it runs on the Android 4.0 ICS operating system skinned with Samsung’s TouchWiz with an update to 4.1 Jelly Bean coming very soon.

For the Nokia Lumia 920 on the other hand there’s a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor, 4.5-inch WXGA VGA display with resolution of 1280 x 768, 1GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. It also has an 8.7-megapixel rear camera with PureView technology, a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera, 2000mAh battery for up to 10 hours of 3G talk time and runs on the very latest Windows Phone 8 OS. There’s no precise release date available but November has been rumored.

As you can see then both handsets have plenty to offer. Samsung’s S3 display has won a lot of praise although Nokia says that its PureMotion HD+ is even better than HD resolution. There’s more RAM on the Galaxy S3 (some versions) and more internal storage options as well as being expandable with microSD, not an option on the Lumia 920 so the Galaxy S3 is ahead on this score. Although the Galaxy S3 battery is marginally more powerful, some people may be won over by the fact that the Lumia 920 has Qi wireless charging technology. Another thing to consider is that while the Galaxy S3 camera has impressed many, the camera of the Lumia has been widely praised and the PureView technology has really come up with the goods for excellent photos and videos.

Both phones have various points that may sway readers’ preference and another comparison on these two phones comes from Stuff. This looks into design and build, screen, OS, processor and camera and the initial verdict seems to be that only time will tell which comes out on top and most of this will depend on your choice of Android or the Windows Phone 8 operating system. There’s also an interesting video look of these two handset from the team at Mobile Geeks and we’ve embedded the video below this story for your viewing pleasure.

Finally, another comparison comes from IBT, which has some interesting insight and looks at all the various aspects we’ve already mentioned. Their conclusion is that the Galaxy S3 wins out over the Lumia 920 but that both may be blitzed over the impending release of the iPhone 5, due to be unveiled at an Apple event tomorrow. We’ll be bringing all the news on that as we hear it so check back with us for more.

Ultimately of course the choice between the Galaxy S3 and Lumia 920 will come down to what you require from a phone and personal preference of design. Availability also comes into the equation and remember the Lumia 920 isn’t on the shelves yet and also pricing for the 920 is not yet available. We hope that our look at comparisons between the two will help you to decide which may be best for you.

We’d like to know if you think you’d prefer the Samsung Galaxy S3 or the Nokia Lumia 920? Maybe you’ll wait to see what the new iPhone has to offer before making up your mind? Let us have your comments on this.

Still more interested in the screen size of the Galaxy Note 2 than either of these. Not interested in Apple products. The deal maker though is the availability of Apps and how quickly W8 takes off, but it would be nice to standardise on Windows across all our devices as it should make interoperability and synchronisation easier – I Hope! Perhaps a Note 2 running W8 would be the answer – please Samsung?

    1. You are right. It is ugly. I also don’t like the interface having all the tiles on my screen. I like looking at a background or a live wallpaper. So far just from the video, the camera is the only thing better. The SG3 is a far better phone overall.

      1. HTC TITAN USER says:

YOU CAN CHANGE ALL THOSE TILES DUMMY AND ALSO THE NOKIA HAS WIRELESS CHARGING,FACEBOOK INTEGRATION , XBOX LIVE , YOU CAN USE IT AS A XBOX 360 CONTROLLER,GET ACHIEVEMENTS,SKYDRIVE(7G),MICROSOFT OFFICE,WAY BETTER OS,LIVE TILES,AND NO LAG WHATSOEVER. NEED MORE REASONS HATER???/

        1. S3 user says:

All the Xbox integration is really helpful if you own a ps3 :P. Also, while I like the idea of a windows os on phones you have to admit that goodle is way ahead on the cloud computing side. Id rather have full integration with google mail, google docs etc from a business point of view. Microsoft still have a long way to go until they catch up. Think of it this way. no one is leaving Google cloud services behind to move to MS, it is in fact the other way round. AND remember, this is a Microsoft platform that will be riddled with bugs and slow response for years to come. (I hope not, Im a windows fan) but still cant ignore Microsoft’s past when it comes to these things. As for Facebook integration. WHY?? why would you want more facebook integration? My S3 already syncs with facebook, thats the most im willing to accept facebook interfere with my life. At the end of the day, this is great, the more competition Apple gets the better. Just waiting for them to sue nokia now for those rounded corners

One size does not fit all, just because you don’t want something doesn’t mean everyone else won’t. Many people like sharing photos quickly.

People are different or should we all wear grey and sit on a bus?

      2. Tamer says:

Watcha gonna do, look at your screen all the time? At least the WP has live tiles. Camera the only thing? How about the laggy OS? Ugly & cheap (like toy plastic) design! Only 2 colours you can choose from. Nokia has a lot more to offer. Just because you don’t like the tiles doesn’t make that a good argument that it is better.

  2. Can’t think of any reason to get a 920 over a Galaxy S3.

It’s less powerful, has a smaller screen, ***No removable battery, no expandable memory*** And a new pureview camera that is nolonger 41mp or even 21mp. It’s just 8mp and is “so good” that they FAKED the entire ad.

Why on Earth should anyone buy this phone?

Android is fragmented, but definately not slow anymore due to Project butter in the newest Jellybean os. fragmentation isnt as bad as most people say it to be. the reason for this “fragmentation” is simply from a llllllll the different screen sizes, different interfaces, etc. which i find to be THE biggest strength of android. if updates are very important you can root your android phone or buy nexus phones. overall i think android has the best os.

        1. ibsy says:

project butter does not make android smoother it gives it faster transitions, android phones are fragmented and they are usaully skinned which takes up ram and slows down the phone, rooting is very complicated for me, nexus phones dont always have the best specs, most phones dont get full android updates and some tablets dont have the full android market

          1. fadilkarim says:

Yes project butter does make android smoother my rampinf up the processor speed the second your fingers touch the screen. With the higher processor speed things are smoother and faster along with the transitions.
They are skinned which adds lots of unique features to each device! I love it! For example samsungs touchwiz has lots of unique toggles in the notification bar that stock android doesn’t have. I believe the skins differentiate each company and enhance the Google experience. The skins are light so they don’t tale much ram, but all newer android phones have 1-2gb of ram anyways which is MORE than enough to run smoothly. But that ram with a powerful processor and all lag is eliminated.
I can understand that not everything is perfect about every operating system. The tradeoff to having such wide variety on android are the fragmentation. So for those who don’t want nexus phones, don’t want to root, and want the fastest updates then I suppose android wouldn’t be for them. I just find the powerful os to be so open and customizable I find investing some time to rooting it is sooo worth it.

    1. HTC TITAN USER says:

WHY DO YOU NEED A REMOVABLE BATTERY??aND THE PUREVIEW CAMERA IS 8.7 NOT 8. wINDOWS OS IS BY FAR THE BEST OUT THERE RIGHT NOW. wIRELESS CHARGING ON THE NOKIA TOO, AND IT LOOKS WAY BETTER. NEED MORE REASONS?

      1. fadilkarim says:

a removable battery is wonderful so you can have spare when your in a long flight, car trip, etc. I value your opinion, but in my opinion the windows os seems a bit to boring and redundant for me.

    2. Joao says:

Why on Earth should anyone buy this phone? I tell you why.

Better camera, Nokia drive, don’t need to take glove off to use the phone, Nokia stream music (don’t need extra storage), unique Nokia City Lens….etc etc.
I could give you a lot more reasons.

Also when you say less powerful and has a smaller screen you should read a bit more before you talk. Smaller screen with more pixels, so easier to read. More powerful because S3 need it. If you open 10 apps on the S3 they all use the phone resources while on WIN8 if you open 10 apps it only keeps one open. When you go back to other apps it re-opens so smooth that you don’t realize it was closed. Lumia is superior to S3, Iphone 5 or any other WIN8 phone.

The review from IBT should be removed from as a reference as it states plain bullshit!! There are a lot of factual errors in IBT’s review and it’s obvious if you give it a silly read atleast and not go by just the title of the article

The Lumia 920 has won me over. The camera absolutely blows the competition away. Unlike the competitors, Nokia devices are really sturdy and don’t break when you drop them (you have to take them to Mordor to destroy them). The ability to use the Lumia 920 with gloves is also important for me. Nokia Maps is great.

The only thing I’m I’ll miss with WP8 is the multitasking. I’d love to run SSH and IRC in the background. Hopefully that will get sorted out.

  5. Sophia says:

The S3 is far better as a phone because of its large screen resolution and quad-core processor. Basically, the only aspect the 920 has on the S3 is better camera….

    1. NO CARRIER says:

The S3 is quad code in SOME markets. In North America, they both share the same Snapdragon 1.5GHz dual code CPU. Also the 920 has a higher resolution, pixel density, and brighter display with deeper blacks than the S3. I should say that I’m a huge fan of Samsung’s AMOLED displays, I own one right now. But the Nokia is the better display. It’s also super touch sensitive, you can use it with gloves on, or even with your fingernails or a penny if you wanted to. Lumia also has the wireless charging, 7GB cloud storage included via SkyDrive, XBOX integration (including being able to use DLNA to play XBOX 360 games integrated into your phone too. Similar to Wii U.

  6. Microsoft is King says:

Its a Samsung, more than enough of a reason to get the Nokia. Windows Phone is different, not like iOS or the iOS copy, Android.

‘Droid users should get of their high horses, android is crap. There is nothing unique about android. Just a copy of iOS with widgets.
