Samsung Galaxy Note 2 vs Nokia Lumia 920 enters the ring

This is the time of year when the smartphone market is rising to a peak in time for the holiday season and there are some great new phones becoming available over the next few weeks. Two that have now been officially announced are the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (Note II) and the Nokia Lumia 920, both flagship devices with a lot riding on them. We thought it would be interesting to compare the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 vs. the Nokia 920 as they enter the ring.

The Galaxy Note 2 is due for release next month in some regions such as Europe, Asia and the Middle East and sometime later in Q4 for other regions such as the US and Canada. Meanwhile the Nokia Lumia 920 is also expected to launch in Q4. Both phones have received a huge amount of attention and the Galaxy Note 2 uses the Android operating system while the Lumia 920 uses Windows Phone. This alone may be enough to make up the minds of some purchasers but let’s look at what else each has to offer.

Firstly we’ll start with the key features and specs of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and this has a 1.6GHz Exynos quad-core processor, massive 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display with resolution of 720 x 1280, 2GB of RAM and internal storage of 16, 32 or 64GB expandable via microSD card. It also has GSM, HSDPA and LTE connectivity, an 8-megapixel rear camera with 1080p video capture and 1.9 front-facing camera, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, NFC and a 3100mAh battery. It comes in Titanium Gray and Marble White color options and weighs 180g with dimensions of 151.1mm x 80.5mm x 9.4mm and there’s also the handy edition of the S Pen stylus. It runs on the very latest Android OS, 4.1 Jelly Bean. Some great specs then, that will impress many.

Compare this with the Nokia Lumia 920 where the overall specs may not be so good although it does looks extremely stylish. The Lumia 920 has a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core Krait processor, 4.5-inch IPS TFT display with resolution of 768 x 1280, 1GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage (not expandable). It also has GSM, HSDPA and LTE connectivity, an 8-megapixel rear camera with the much admired PureView technology and 1080p video capture, plus a 1.3-megapixel front-facing shooter. Add to that Bluetooth 3.1, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/, NFC and a 2000mAh battery. Color options are black, gray, red, yellow or white and it weighs in at 185g with dimensions of 130.3mm x 70.8mm x 10.7mm. As you can see then, although some of the specs may not be as great there’s still plenty to impress and the camera in particular has been highly praised. This one will run on the new and upcoming Windows Phone 8 OS.

Any decision between the two will be down to personal preference, for instance fans of larger screens are likely to favor the Note 2 but those who use their phones a lot for photography may prefer the Lumia 920. It’s fair to say that Samsung is likely to have another hit on its hands following the success of the original Galaxy Note. Meanwhile Nokia and Microsoft have a lot riding on the Lumia 920 with the new Windows Phone 8 OS in their bid to encroach upon the Android share of the market.

It looks likely to be an interesting few months ahead and we’d like to hear your thoughts on these two smartphones. Have you already made your decision to purchase one of these two upcoming smartphones? If you have, what was the deciding factor for you? Let us know with your comments.

  1. You get a Note for free? because you write a biased article? The Lumia 920 is technically much better as the Note. Not only hardware is better but also the Sofware. Ok I see already this is a UK site, that explains it all. Big Crapdroid base. You write to the percentage of the owners, lets say 60% Crapdroid, 30% iSheep, 10% Windows Phone. When these figures change you will adjust your reviews accordingly. So these UK reviews are not based on specs but on percentages, clever 🙂

Get back under you bridge troll. How is the 920 technically better? Jelly bean shits on any other OS out there. The Note 2 has 2GB of Ram, and 3100 mAh battery, a 1.6GHz QUAD-core processor, Expandable storage, a less expensive yet much more prolific market…need I go on. The 920 is a great phone, sure, but it’s out of it’s league here!

      1. Lumia is here to stay says:

It isn’t. It is very much in the league of modern-day heavy-weights. Don’t go by number of cores or max frequency. Snapdragon S4 with dual krait cores can beat any other CPU out there(read Exynos quad). It uses a 28nm semiconductor technology with is much faster. Adreno 225 is just as competent as Mali 400 if not better. Again, the numbers for ram and battery don’t necessarily translate into everyday performance(the OSes are different here). Plus Lumia 920 scores well in less quantifiable areas, like ergonomics, design, picture quality, video quality etc. There is no denying Note 2 is an outstanding phone, but not considering Lumia 920 in “the league” is sheer ignorance or arrogance or both.

        1. I am also big Nokia fan, well I was 🙂 Now I hate Nokia for failing miserably with theirs mobile products – failing from any angle you would look at it. Nokia does not focus on what consumers want, it took the path of strategy defined by few whose end goal is personal wealth. Samsung and Apple on they end deliver exactly what consumer is looking for.
Any one who is not affiliated and praises Nokia products are simply bias and/or blind.

The biggest miatake Nokia ever made was not adopting Android.

I’ll be buying the Note 2, upgrading from my S2 but if the new Nokia flagship sailed on a different OS maybe I’d have been tempted.

If I had the money, I’d have a Note 2, Nokia 920 and an iPhone 5.

Actually I thank the lord every day that Nokia didn’t choose Android. Android is crap, ugly and extremely inefficient.

    1. Ehm, iphone 5 is so 2010. If you don’t want a smartphone, get a feature phone or iPhone (same thing btw). IPhone is so primitive and limited, one can say it’s only for retards. So yeah, go get ityou isheep

  2. I have the original Galaxy Note & have to say its the first phone Ive ever completely fell in love with, the size of it is amazing. I cant wait till the release of the G-Note 2, its the ultimate device the thing is a beast. Nothing can compare to the Galaxy Note 2 at all that is out right now or coming out this year. Without a doubt it will be the best selling smartphone of 2012. To the person who said they were going to buy an iPhone 5 you really should rethink your decision & buy anything else Android or hell even Windows but the iPhone after the company told everyone in their own words that they are overcharging for outdated or mid-range specs come on. To think the Nokia is big damn you must be a miget, sorry little person to think that. -KID ANDROID

I INFORMED MICROSOFT ALREADY THAT. THERE ARE GOING TO BE ALOT OF UPSET PEOPLE PERTAINING TO WIN 8. ME I DONOT THINK ITS ALL THAT. BUT I WILL MOST LIKELY BE GETTING MY FIRST ANDRIOD PHONE. WHICH WILL BE THE GALAXY NOTE 2(GOT TO LOVE THE SPECS)AND THAT IS ALL I CARE ABOUT. PEACE AM OUT

I’ve a galaxy s2, and a galaxy s before that. I think I’ll go for note 2. But I think Samsung as a company doesn’t know how to present itself. Look at Apple, they showcased the iPhone 5 and then gave a had date on when preorders can be placed and on which carriers. Samsung showed its phone a few weeks ago, with a vague “sometime in the next few months” in “most carriers.” I’m not a fan of apple, otherwise, I’d have jumped ship a while ago. What Samsung is doing with its uncertainty in terms of availability dates and carriers is very unprofessional.

Currently I’m using a Galaxy Note1 which is pretty good and can run so many apps at once with its Dual Core processor. Screen is huge, but still manages to go into most of the pockets.
But with the new release of Lumia 920, I would definietly go for that bcz it got the style and I’m bored with the old Android OS. I would like to give the Windows 8 a try and I’m pretty sure so many apps will come in the future as it has the same kernal like the PC version of Windows 8. Camera is pretty impressive and I’m most excited with the JBL speakers which can play music wirelessly and same time can charge it without connecting any wires. Thank you Nokia & Microsoft for producing such a great phone.

920 looks good but no expandable memoory and wont play BBC iPlayer so lack of both is a negative. Good office compatibility though is a positive as the Android system often corrupts on synchronisation!
