Google Nexus 4 vs Nokia Lumia 920, Christmas gift choice

We are now in that time of year again when we are thinking about what to buy friends and family during the run up to the holiday season now Halloween has past, or what we might want to treat ourselves with. When it comes to getting a new smartphone there is arguably more choice than ever, and today we are looking at the Google Nexus 4 vs the Nokia Lumia 920 for a Christmas gift choice.

Obviously the two handsets in question operate on two different operating systems, but if you are not overly bothered whether you get an Android or Windows Phone 8 device these two handsets are worth considering.

Processor and power
Both handsets use Qualcomm processors but the LG Nexus 4 uses the 1.5 GHz quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor coupled with a Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB of RAM, while the Nokia Lumia 920 uses a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual core Krait chip with 1GB of RAM.

Display
The Nokia Lumia 920 features a 4.5-inch IPS TFT touchscreen that has a resolution of 1280 x 768, which compares to the Google Nexus 4 that has a 4.7-inch True HD IPS Plus display with 1280 x 768 pixel resolution, which is arguably the better of the two displays.

Storage
The Nexus 4 comes in either 8GB or 16GB without the option of expanding this further, while the Lumia 920 has 32GB of on board storage that also is not expandable, which seems to be a growing trend from certain handset manufacturers.

Cameras
Nokia has long been famous for having smartphones with great cameras fitted, and the Lumia 920 looks set to continue this trend with an 8MP rear camera with PureView technology, while around the front is a 1.3MP shooter. This compares to the Nexus 4 that features an 8MP rear camera with a 1.3MP front facing shooter.

Design
The Lumia 920 measures in at 130.3mm x 70.8mm x 10.7mm weighing 185 grams, which compares to the Nexus 4 that measures 133.9mm x 68.7 x 9.1mm weighing only 139 grams. Both handsets have a nice slim look to them, but the Nokia is available in brighter colour options if that’s your thing.

Software
The Nokia Lumia 920 will obviously come running the new Windows Phone 8 operating system that promises seamless integration with Windows 8, while the Nexus 4 will launch with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

Pricing
Google is selling the Nexus 4 starting at £239/$299 for the 8GB version going up to £279/$349 for the 16GB, while the Nokia Lumia 920 in the UK is thought to cost around £380 SIM free.

Are you considering getting either the Nexus 4 or Nokia Lumia 920?

  1. the nokia 920 looks like it is going to be a amazing phone the camera wasnt talked about enough, the pureview is a real killer, low light photos look amazing and the image stabalization tech is amazing for a phone……plus the clearback in the nokia is great for outdoors…. have a proper look at the 920 it is the chrissy choice for sure 🙂

Waiting for my Nexus 4. Love my pure android only Google does that without any bloatware, Or slow updates while carriers screw around with the updates only to add extra junk!

Arguably the better display. They neglected to mention the 920s higher refresh rate and brilliant ClearBlack technology. Android also requires more processor power for equivalent tasks than WP. Android is a more popular OS, but that doesn’t mean it’s better – so basically the only real Nexus strength is the price, and your opinion.

The Lumia does have more storage. I’m actually looking forward to trying out WP8 once something lands on Verizon however the Nexus 4 is an incredible device and the Photo Sphere feature is killer. Hands down the Nexus 4 is the phone to get over WP8 or the iPhone. Only drawback is that Verizon and Sprint customers are out of luck.

  3. Ian Witts says:

The only issue with the Lumia 920 is that is so much heavier than any other smartphones in its class. Whilst it’s not a massive issue, the Nokia 7650 (the original Nokia camera / smart phone) only weighed in at 154gm and the 920 is 185gm!

LUMIA of course. android is so last season. like symbian. only a gay or a nerd would take nexus. last year i switched my iphone to s2 for the same reason. i want to be in leading edge, and not like my parents. whom are both nerds and gay.

The Lumia 920 is actually priced somewhere at £460 whereas the 820 is priced at £380. Also, the Lumia 920 is considerably heavier and bulkier than any phone I have seen recently. If looks and design are important factors the Nexus 4 will win over many.

  6. I really believe the Nexus 4 has just killed off Nokia, only the most hardened fanboi would be willing to pay £140 MORE for an inferior device.

The impact of the Nexus 4 on the market cannot be underestimated, and old saying which will ring so true with Nokia’s demise, don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

WP8 looks the same as 7.5 and we all know how it fared……….just a pity Nokia did not even release ONE android handset (I suspect their pact with MS forbids this), I was all ready to buy the N9 until they pulled it.

Dang it! I was so set on the Lumia… but the more I look at the Nexus 4, the more I admire it! I love the fluidity of Windows Phone, but it seems like in Jelly Bean, lag is fixed in most cases. Also features offered in the Nexus 4 are appealing like the Photo Sphere thingy and such. Also, I am on at&t and the Lumia will be offered around $149 to $199 on contract (which I don’t really mind) but off contract is a $299 Nexus… If someone could help me decide, I would appreciate it! Another thing… does anyone know if the wireless charging thingy for the Nexus 4 will come with the phone?

    1. Guaranteed 18 months of support and updates for WP8 phones. Little or no malware and an OS that is optimal for communication. Integrated Skype, Facebook, Twitter etc.

Sign into Facebook and all your events and people’s birthdays automatically appear in the calendar and so on.

Nexus 4 has the same support as Windows Phone. Updates comes directly from Google. It had better overall specs and is cheaper. More apps than W8 and great improvements to software security. (Androids popularity like W7 means more viruses)

There is a massive development community. Without rooting your phone you can customize it to look as unique as you want.

Giles Jones makes valid points but android makes social integration just as easy. Viruses are everywhere best defense is to be aware of what app you download. Nokia is still a great choice but my money is on the Nexus 4. £239. to be exact.

      1. Alden says:

Thanks! I’ll wait to see what the Lumia comes with on at&t; I’m hearing it may come with a wireless charging pad… If that’s not true and if I can only get the yellow color online, then I will probably pick the nexus over the Lumia… I am also a person who prefers to avoid cases; if I do that, the nexus, more than likely, will shatter :(…

I just can’t get over the 32 GB on the Lumia and the different and fresh OS of Windows Phone. I guess my only hindrance right now is deciding on storage, OS, and durability… :/

“Androids popularity like W7 means more viruses” ?????

I can’t believe my eyes, do you mean Windows Phone 7?????
What viruses have you heard about on Windows Phone?

        1. I meant Windows 7 or in general Windows, all PC versions. Reading in context is also part of grammar. Everything I said was within a particular context. You’d have to read again to figure that out.

  8. whatsa2 says:

probably the 920 is my choice although that is not to say anything bad
about the Nexus it is an equally good phone with unique features of its
own. I would really like to get a jolla mobile, The best phone OS and
tag in android market place and qt etcetc. but I think it will be next year
( rumour has it samsung is thick as theives on jolla)

  9. sorry nexus, no LTE camera, camera is crap, (Photo Sphere is just panorama mode not quilitty os camera) read the verge nexus 4 back glass very soon broken. 8 – 16 gb memory you are joking. price yes super but i want best phone lumia tank for my. sorry google

  10. dbest180 says:

Nexus 4 is the winner hands down. One can argue all other points except price. Which in the end might be the deciding factor for some. Everything else is preference and fanboi taste.

  11. SIMBA says:

Nokia lumia will be available sim free from phones 4 u. According to the employee of my local shop they will be available sim free as of next week although Nokia has already delayed the order once. The sim free price is written in very small lettering on the tariff card under all the tariff prices next to the demo phone. I didn’t even see it till he pointed it out #microscoperequired

  12. Dancot93 says:

I have no faith in windows phone 8, nor in specs out dated from Nokia I appreciate Windows is the best software (for PC & laptops) and Nokia provide best quality phone calls. But Windows struggle for usability on Tablets and Phones and windows 8 hopes for usability an synchronisation across there PC’s, laptops phones and upcoming games console. But the strategies used are not going to work, they need to essentially follow Google and release a top spec phone and tablet for low price (AKA not with Nokia . Microsoft only care about present revenues. (look at the Microsoft surface if that retailed at £249 they could get their foot in the door in the tablet market using a quality low cost hybrid. Google and lg understand one phone that does not profit may create consumer trust. Nokia for me cannot provide anything that matters anymore, auction their quality call technologies and patents to other phone makers and shut down. i am sad to say a good quality phone call does not matter to much when compared to the Iphone or Galaxy phones.

  13. Don says:

The Lumia 920 is the better phone on my opinion, because it looks better, the camera is better (carl zeiss optic and pure view technology), best display currently on the market with most ppi and i like WP8 because it hasn’t all these unnecessary apps, games and the other crap but it’s better for working and normal using because of office and the standard apps for smartphone like whatsapp, tango, viber & co. i would prefer WP than android because its still better for working and looks nicer than android.

Both smartphones are great but i wouldn’t choice a Samsung phone because they just feel cheap.

    Greetings from Germany, Don 🙂
