Samsung Galaxy S3 & Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean dissatisfaction

The Android platform although extremely popular often gets criticised about the levels of fragmentation with the operating system and the amount of different versions currently in use. This is now affecting some owners of the Samsung Galaxy S3 with three different versions of the Android operating system being used around the world, which recently saw the release of the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update with owners now showing some frustration waiting for the new firmware to arrive.

A few days ago we told you that Samsung had begun rolling out the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update to owners of the unlocked version of the Samsung Galaxy S3, and while some of our readers have confirmed receiving the new software many others are saying they haven’t.

I have been checking my own handset daily since the news of the new firmware broke and have so far not received it, I have been checking via the not very good Samsung KIES desktop application as well as on the handset itself.

It has to be remembered though that software updates are always staggered once released so it may take a while to reach all unlocked versions of the handset. You have to spare a thought though for those that own the Galaxy S3 that is still stuck on Ice Cream Sandwich and in the same countries where other carrier versions have been already upgraded.

In the UK customers of T-Mobile and Orange at the time of writing still have their Galaxy S3’s running Android 4.0, where rival carrier versions along with unlocked models have been enjoying the update for a while. The same can be said about Verizon Wireless users over in the US as we recently told you customers of the carrier are still wondering when they will see the new firmware.

The Android 4.1.2 update will bring some nice new features to the handset though once it arrives, as we have already reported the handset will be welcoming some of the features that are already found on the Galaxy Note 2 such as Multi-View.

We have also found a video posted on YouTube that can be seen below that highlights some of the new features that Samsung has added to the smartphone with the 4.1.2 update, and includes what is being called Premium Suite. A number of features are showcased and the video is part one and ends by saying to keep a look out for part 2, where more features are set to be shown off.

This latest update that has begun rolling out doesn’t even take the device to the most recent version of the operating system, Android 4.2, which will mean more waiting for owners of the handset. Hopefully those of you that are still waiting for Jelly Bean won’t have too much longer to wait and the carriers in question get their act together and update their customers handsets.Update: We have now added part two of the video below.

Have you received Android 4.1.2 yet on your unlocked Samsung Galaxy S3?

nope.. not tmob uk and not their locked handsets.,. (if u got an S3 direct from tmob uk when it was brand new, you may have got an unlocked version as they were sending out unlocked handsets at the launch, and this version can be updated but most tmob users have locked versions and we are still waiting, along with orange uk customers.. the popular conspiracy theory doing the rounds is that EE have purposely held back the update to encourage more sales and upgrades to S3 LTE (4G version) which comes with 4.1.1 out of the box,,)

i think thats the unlocked uk version? if it is, then you should be able to update your handset by downloading samsung kies and connect phone to it, and should say there is an update available.. give it a go..

You probably meant 4.1.1 which has been around for couple of months. 4.1.2 has just started rolling out, I am on O2 as well and it`s still not available.

I downloaded it the other night but now Draw Something won’t open. This may seem like a petty problem to most, but I’m a fiend for that game and it’s driving me INSANE.

Wasn’t that bothered until now….. Now 2 updates missing, latest with multi view…. Getting more xissed by the day… Orange need a new strategy which includes releasing updates to its customers!! Very poor…. sreleasing updates

I would not worry about the 4.1.1 update there’s no real difference to ics and don’t know what all the fuss was about but 4.1.2 sounds like a better update altogether

    1. Google Now is a huge improvement. The new Google voice search is day and night better, Project Butter improves performance in every aspect over Ice Cream Sandwich. Honestly, have you even used Jelly Bean, yet? It’s a massive leap forward.

never going to renew a contract with orange every again, that is for sure. this is just unacceptable and i’d rather give my money to anyone else over this. i’m actually considering just finishing the contract and doing away with them. awful, awful, awful (i cannot say this enough)

Or if you’ve got any technical nouse at all then you’ll download the polish release(doesn’t matter if you’re in the uk) and install using Odin and ,hey presto, you’re running the newest version of jb! Simples! I did it last night and multi view is genius. Take that iPhone!!!

I have the SGIII with ATT: received a text on 11/7/12 from ATT with the link to upgrade to Jelly Bean. Over the past week, I have installed and uninstalled Kies and drivers numerous times, all with the same message in my system tray: “Hardware ID missing”. I contacted Samsung: the guy messed up my phone (now fixed). I contacted ATT: THEY said that since this update will NOT be offered over the air, my only alternative is to go to an ATT device support center (not an ATT store), and they will install the update for you. I called the nearest center, and they don’t have this update yet, however will at some point in the future. UGH

Got 4.1.2 an hour or so ago. Took three hours using Samsung’s crappy Kies – kept on hanging, and eventually had to do an emergency firmware recover which worked. Impressed the update, gallery is better, love the multi window setting [great show-off value]. Screen re-orientates a lot quicker and on the whole it seems faster. Like the news ‘ticker’ on the lock screen and like the way when you display a photo it gives a quick summary of where you where at the time etc

Seriously not happy with the new changes that they have made to the predictive text input. I think it is a step backwards in many ways. I also don’t like the swipe feature to swap between characters and letters. I liked having the punctuation in the top corner of the keyboard after you had selected the word you wanted from the predictive text panel.

Not happy Samsung. Get it sorted!

orange put their own soft ware on to their phones which doesnt allow the updates to happen which i am fuming about, you get pushed from pillare to post when trying to actually find out the real reason and when i finally spoke to samusung they told me its all to with orange and the hardware they put on the phones themselves, got back onto the phone to orange and after them, trying to fob me off again (i wasnt having any of it ) they offered to buy me out of my contract but as of yet i havent received my return bag for phone …………. how can orange have out on contract /pay as you go as a wireless updating phone when the phones dont actually update
