Sky Go & Android Jelly Bean love after update

If you are a Sky TV customer and have access to an Android or iOS mobile device there are a number of applications that allow you to get content onto your device, or to even record programs on your Sky+ box no matter where you may be. Android users though that have a handset in the last few months couldn’t use the Sky Go app running certain versions of the operating system, but now the app has seen some Jelly Bean love after an update.

I was one of many Android users that couldn’t get access to the Sky Go app after purchasing the Samsung Galaxy S3 that is running Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, and found it frustrating not being able to watch any Sky TV content on my smartphone. Now though Sky has updated the application so it works on Jelly Bean for a select number of handsets.

This now includes 25 supported devices with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy S3LTE, Galaxy S3 Mini, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S, Galaxy Note, Note 2, Galaxy Nexus, and Galaxy Ace 2. There are also a number of HTC devices supported as well including the HTC One V, One S, One X, One XL, Desire, Desire S, Desire X, Desire HD, Incredible S, Sensation, and Sensation XE.

The app is also available on the likes of the LG Nexus 4, Nexus 7, LG 4X HD, Sony Xperia T, and Xperia S. Obviously not all these handsets will ever run on Android Jelly Bean but the app is listed as working on Android 2.2 and above up to the most recent update, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

Sky Go gives access to 43 channels including Sky Movies and Sky Sports, but many customers were left frustrated when Jelly Bean was first released and Sky didn’t offer any support for the operating system.

Meanwhile the Sky+ application has been updated on the iOS platform to now include On Demand TV downloads, which includes content from the likes of the BBC iPlayer and Demand 5. Users can now with a simple click on the app on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch record around 6000 hours of popular programmes.

At the time of writing Sky has yet to update the Android version of the Sky+ application to offer access to On Demand services, which will again anger Android users who always seem to wait much longer to get features from Sky.

Do you use the Sky Go or Sky+ smartphone apps?
