Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 update to 4.1 Jelly Bean hits problems

#

We always like to keep readers informed about operating system updates and have posted regular articles lately about Android Jelly Bean arriving for various devices. Unfortunately some device owners end up having to wait far longer for OS updates than others and we are now hearing that there could be problems for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 update to 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Many owners of this tablet have been waiting patiently for their first experience of Android Jelly Bean on the device, as it was summer of 2012 that the Galaxy Tab 7.7 last received an update. That was to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and it seems as though ICS may have to last a while longer yet.

It is being reported that Samsung is having difficulties with the update and it’s believed to be something to do with the Exynos processor, which for some unspecified reason doesn’t seem to like Jelly Bean 4.1. It’s thought that the update to Jelly Bean may be around May or June but these apparent problems could push the update back even further, especially for owners in the US who often get the update after those in other regions.

That would mean that Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, the next major upgrade, could be available before Jelly Bean even arrives for the Galaxy Tab 7.7. Not good news then but we’ll be looking out for more developments on this and will of course pass on information as we hear it.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on the delays for the Galaxy Tab 7.7 in getting the update to 4.1 Jelly Bean. Are you the owner of this tablet and frustrated to learn there may yet be a lengthy wait? Maybe you don’t mind the wait as long as your device gets a taste of Jelly Bean in the end? Let us know with your comments.

  1. I bought the 7.7 the first month it arrived. Its still my go-to tablet after two other tablet purchases. Samsung makes great hardware, but their software roll-out has been pretty bad. If they released their drivers after a year or so, then groups like xda-developers would port the latest software for them and it would increase the value of their latest hardware. But I think that is a hopeless wish.

Josh – I’ve bought that device early in around February 2012 – expecting ICS to come along shortly (as promised). Although I’ve been impressed and delighted by the mere hardware quality, the crispy display, perfect form factor and good design – I’m almost lucky today that it fell down from the 3rd floor onto a concrete floor and is shattered to pieces since a couple of weeks now – otherwise I could not stand it anymore seeing my small and cheap Nexus 7 at its side having so much better software already. Never ever again will I buy any device that is not a “Nexus” or will be capable of getting direct updates from “vanilla” Android versions ….

I’ve had my 7.7 (WiFi) pretty much since it was launched in Australia. 3.2 was a joke but I have to say I’m loving ICS. Although I’m always on the lookout for my next tablet purchase, I’ve seen nothing else that comes close to the 7.7 in terms of hardware, form factor or general funtionality. The 10.1″ Sony Xperia Z tablet looks like a nice piece of kit but the 7.7/8″ form factor is hard to beat, especially for my needs (TV/surfing on the train). The Sony will almost certainly expensive too. If the 7.7 gets JB, great; if not, so be it. It’s still the best device of that form factor our there, bar none.

I’m one of first owners of tab 7.7 I can’t replace my tab becuse of I bay to much many and wair to much for update and now the price gos down.secand nothing can compare tap 7.7 in shape and size except ipad mini only update can make it the best.

  5. This is absurd… Why you’re pushing your customers to go for the ROOTING route?? I’ve been tempted ever since the CYANOGEN mods started appearing but I never took the plunge as I thought the OFFICIAL OS is what I REALLY wanted since it’ll be the COMPLETE and PURE experience.. however, NOW I am not so sure..

BTW, this is an awesome device and I’ve had this for some time.. I haven’t upgraded yet to ICS as I wanted to give 3.2 a fair chance among all the criticism that I witnessed. I also hoped that I may be able to skip ICS all together and jump directly to JB but that seems far now.. so I will definitely do the ICS upgrade now..

One final statement for SAMSUNG!! I love your hardware, BUT I HATE YOU for your software updates!
