Samsung Galaxy S3 JB 4.2.2 update soon, US may miss KLP 5.0

#

If you are the owner of the Samsung Galaxy S3 or Galaxy Note 2 then there’s good news today as it seems the Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 update will be rolled out soon. However we have to temper this with a caution if you’re the owner of a Samsung Galaxy S3 US variant as it seems that this may not then be further updated to Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie as was previously expected.

We’ll start at the beginning with a tweet that has been posted by SamMobile regarding both the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2. The tweet says that the Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 update will be rolling out to those devices sometime in May/June. We cannot verify this but if accurate this news will be widely welcomed by Galaxy S3 and Note 2 owners as it will bring benefits such as the most up-to-date version of Samsung’s Nature UX and further Jelly Bean-specific features.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is to launch worldwide from later this month and will be running Android 4.2.2 out of the box and so many Galaxy S3 and Note 2 owners will also be hoping they will receive some of the newest features being debuted on the GS4. However it seems that if you have a US Galaxy S3 model then 4.2.2 may be your last Android update and you may not get Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie after all.

Last month we brought you news of a leaked list of various Samsung devices that would be receiving new Android firmware and at that time it seemed as though the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 would at some point receive the next major Android OS upgrade 5.0 Key Lime Pie on its eventual release. This is expected to be a major upgrade and you can imagine that most Galaxy S3 owners would automatically assume their devices would be receiving the update at some point down the line.

However further clarification from SamMobile says that dual-core Samsung devices will be stuck on Android JB 4.2.2 once they have it and it seems that only quad-core devices will now receive the upgrade to 5.0 Key Lime Pie. In a report about future updates for the Galaxy Tab 2 SamMobile states, “The insider reconfirmed. All smartphones and tablets based on a dual-core processor will end on Android 4.2.2.” That seems clear enough and of course as many variants of the Samsung Galaxy S3 have a quad-core processor they will of course receive 5.0 Key Lime Pie in due course.

However there’s a spanner in the works as the variants of the Galaxy S3 for the US market had a 1.5GHz Qualcomm dual-core processor instead of the 1.4GHz Exynos quad-core CPU in other models. Hence this certainly implies that Galaxy S3 owners in the US will never get to enjoy Key Lime Pie and we imagine that if this is indeed the case there will be plenty of upset and frustrated US customers. It looks like Galaxy Note 2 owners will still get 5.0 Key Lime Pie though, as all models have quad-core processors.

We’d really like to know what you think about this news on Android updates for the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Note 2. Are you happy to hear that Jelly Bean 4.2.2 looks set to roll out in May or June? Maybe you’re the owner of a Galaxy S3 US variant and dismayed to hear that it looks as though your flagship device will not now be upgraded to 5.0 Key Lime Pie? Let us know with your comments.

then the s3 will be my first and last samsung phone. if they can’t support a Misek that is one year old, I can’t support them

  2. Frank says:

I like this samsung galaxy s3 but will go back to a iPhone if I dont get a update!
Thats my number 1 complaint about android… no updates after a device is 6mo to a year old. Come on, keep up with apple on the software updatez

  3. This is starting to become like apple I just bought a gs3 now I’m pissed, I left Motorola cause of this same crap with software updates, I’m starting to hate the choices these oppressive corporate people take, first and last phone purchase I will ever make this is upsetting.

Yes! I get every update the same time as the latest iPhone 5. Every update brought something new to my aged phone. I find my OS refreshed, cleaned up, nuances gone. And don’t give me that crap about maps – works just as google’s worked before apple switched. I live in central California, I use imaps everyday to find customers locations – there are no problems in this area.

          Enjoy your outdated, half-baked, widgets.

Lmao keep telling your self that the iphone isn’t a old out dated pos all you want but everyone that I know that had icrap has moved on to Android so have fun with your over priced junk…….dumbass!

  4. I agree with Frank. I’ll get the iphone because iphone doesn’t have this type of issues. There is always some type of issues with android phones. It’s like they don’t trust their own products and make excuses so people could keep buying their products. I don’t see this problem with APPLE products.

  5. Justin says:

What you’re all missing is that this is NOT a Samsung decision, but rather a Google decision. Don’t blame Samsung. And there will likely be a ported ROM that will work on the S3 within a week of KLP coming out.

Feel free to read all my previous comments and known that I am a hard core Samsung fan. However, this is unacceptable. I don’t think Samsung will really do this. They are desperately trying to get dominance in the United States. They will not accomplish this by depriving it of the latest software. Samsung, the ball is in your court. You know what you need to do to keep your customers. There are no excuses.

  7. No more Samsung phones for me says:

Basically every flag ship phone from Samsung or android OS will become a disposable phone after a year of use, since it wont be able to support future OS updates, well for a big corporation it doesn’t care if some one spend $500 to $600 is already sold, so the next wave just jump in….I wanted a change from the Iphone, since the OS is getting boring, but at least Apple support their phone updates after a year of being in the market…..

  8. Billl says:

I’ve had enough there are other phones, also my frustration will spill over to TV’s as well as other Samsung products – phone is 6 months old and already will be outdated

  9. Corkey Lloyd says:

The US is one of the biggest buyers of the Galaxy S3 but overseas always get the better phones why is that we get dual core and they get quad core phones i had my S3 for almost a year now and now they want to change thing because of a new phone lets think who will get what i’ll say US will get a quad core and they will get a 8 core overseas what do you think

  10. redkid69 says:

All these apple guys saying they get software updates…even on 3gs, what a load of crap! Apple in the uk have told me not to update to latest software as the 3gs wont work. Yet my apps are starting to say if I dont update tge phone then they will no longer work!? Wgat a load of crap!!! My brother in law has the gs3 and its AMAZING! I will not be getting another iphone!

  11. Pist says:

Yea, like Frank said. If I don’t get this update I’m done with android for good. They get us to spend literally HUNDREDS on their products and then 5 months later, they tell us it’s obsolete and won’t be improved anymore. Show some courtesy for your darn loyal customers and help us…gosh darn it.

  12. Mr Brad says:

So a $700 US best-in-class device is considered end-of-life by its manufacturer a year later.

Imagine if the manufacturer of the PC you bought last year refused to allow upgrades to the OS this year.
