Nexus 5 manufacturer prospects discussed

#

The Google Nexus 5 smartphone is one of the most hotly anticipated devices of the year, and we have been hearing many rumors and leaked specs for the device. Until recently it was widely thought that LG would be manufacturing the Nexus 5, after its success with the Nexus 4, but more recently that has been in doubt. Today we want to discuss alternative manufacturer prospects for the Nexus 5.

The story behind LG’s involvement with the Nexus 5 has been a varied picture. At one time this looked very likely, and then more recently LG seemed to be disclaiming the idea. Following this though, there were reports of an LG prototype Nexus 5 in testing, once again making it seem probable that LG was involved, before new reports once again dismissed this news. As you can see then, it has all been rather confusing, but the consensus of opinion at the moment seems to be that LG is unlikely to be involved in the Nexus 5.

This opens up the possibility of other manufacturers for the Nexus 5. We recently touched on some comments from readers about brands for the Nexus 5, and now we will discuss some possible manufactures and how likely their involvement is for this upcoming smartphone. Apart from LG, other makers of Nexus handsets so far are Samsung and HTC, and of course Asus collaborated with Google to produce the Nexus tablet. So will it be one of these who comes up with the Nexus 5 or an alternative?

One of the most likely options of manufacturer for the Nexus 5 would appear to be Samsung. This would be a popular choice among Android enthusiasts as Samsung is so dominant in the Android market. Not only has the company previously produced Google Nexus devices, but it also gains kudos from its popular Galaxy devices. However, as the Galaxy S4 has just released and the Galaxy Note 3 is upcoming, will Samsung want to put resources and energy into another Nexus collaboration right now?

Motorola is another pick for the next Nexus manufacturer, especially after Google’s acquisition of the company. There are already many rumors and leaks about the Motorola X (or Moto X) phone collaboration with Google, and initially when this device first leaked many people wondered if indeed this would turn out to be the Nexus 5. However, that idea was soon dispelled, but as Motorola seems to be focusing on the Motorola X at the moment it seems less likely that it will also be producing the Nexus 5.

There are mixed odds for HTC being the next brand of Nexus smartphone. HTC manufactured the very first Nexus phone and has a well-established involvement with Google. Times have been hard for HTC lately, but the highly successful HTC One seems to be helping to reverse the company’s downward spiral. The possibility certainly exists then that the Nexus 5 could be made by HTC.

We should also add Sony to the equation, with the impressive recent Xperia Z receiving much admiration from Android fans. It’s possible that this could have attracted attention from Google and the company could partner with Sony for the Nexus 5, but again following its success with the Xperia Z Sony may prefer to put momentum behind more of its own devices.

Moving on to Asus, many people may not even consider the company for a new Nexus smartphone, as although it created the popular Nexus 7 tablet it doesn’t have a big profile in the phone market. However, this could be a way for Asus to heighten its handset profile, and so we shouldn’t rule the company out yet for the Nexus 5.

Hopefully it shouldn’t be too much longer until Google makes some sort of announcement about the Nexus 5, but another factor also needs to be taken into account. We have already heard of a Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition and also an HTC One Google Edition on the way, recently joined by rumors of a Sony Xperia Z Google Edition. Considering this, we wonder if these companies will also want to be involved in a Nexus device. Also we wonder, as these devices will be running stock Android, will this mean that there will be less demand for the Nexus 5?

We’ll certainly be keeping our nose to the ground for further information on the Nexus 5, and of course we’ll pass on that news to readers as we hear it. In the meantime we’d really appreciate your thoughts on the Nexus 5 and the possible manufacturer of this device. Is there any particular manufacturer you would prefer to see produce the Nexus 5? If so, what has influenced your decision? Who do you think Google will choose? Send your comments to let us know.

i will prefer HTC as the first choice , and ASUS the second choice to make Nexus 5. i bought Nesus one made by HTC- its the best make of all nexus series phone sofar. Also I bought Nexus 7- so would recommend Asus as the second choice to make Nexus 5. Eventually we are all aware, Google will produce all Nexus series or start a new series with Motorola.

I have been seriously very impressed with LG. I run all Nexus and my own version of Linux on my laptop.
An LG Optimus g pro version of Nexus of a Nexus 5 along those lines with be a very big hitter. LG seem ta make better quality hardware phones than Samsung in my opinion. An HTC Nexus 5 would be bad ass, but if you think about it, why would Samsung or HTC release a Nexus 5 especially after there putting some of their work behind a Nexus-experience GS4 and a One.
As Mr. Pichai has asserted, one of Google’s top priorities for Android is to promote the Nexus experience and find a fix for the Android saturation problem.
I believe that Google might try to enlist as many phone manufacturers as possible and steer them towards that Nexus experience and garner some more excitement by pick LG, Asus, or even Sony for their next Nexus release. Motorola might be unlikely. They have their hands too busy getting things right with their MotorX.
These are my thoughts…. We, the true lovers of vanilla Android, have not been in a more exiting time in the past than now. I am losing sleep thinking about the amazing possibilities. Yes, this is my life and I love it 🙂

The big problem with the “Google Edition” of the Galaxy S4 and HTC One is that they still use the hardware buttons. The best thing about a Nexus phone(besides the obvious stock Android) is that they use onscreen buttons instead of the hardware buttons. The onscreen buttons will hopefully allow the phones to be smaller.

didn’t even think of this…why doesn’t the S4 use onscreen buttons? seems silly for samsung to stick to hardware buttons with a phone like that.

Some people may not agree. But back in the day (2001) when I first got my first mobile phone, I grab a Nokia. Nokia’s mobile phones were rather good and stayed good for years. They were not made in china, they were made in Europe. One would find them accidently run through the laundry machine after soaked in gallons of water. And “Bang” dry them off, plug them in the charger then turn them on a make a successful call. I would like that would be where you would want a google to make there phones. A phone that might go thru a hard knock and still hold up.

It would be really nice if Google made their own hardware this time around 4.7 inch 720p super LCD 2 + screen with no bezel same form factor maybe a little more square snap dragon s6 pro with 2-4 GB of ram in 16 32 and maybe 64 GB variants black and white versions out of the gate. No buttons no branding with a small Nexis logo on the bottom left side. Wireless charging key lime pie and at least a 2500 may battery hspa+ or late maybe both doesn’t matter that much to me at least. Starts at 299 349 and 399 maybe flexible no shatter glass along with being water proof for at least 30 minutes in 5 meters of water. Can you say dream phone

NO! The last two Nexus have been 720p. My Galaxy Nexus (4.65″) released in 2011 is 720p. The Nexus 4 (4.7″) is also 720p. This is 2013, and all top tier Android are going 1080p. Needs to be 1080p.

5″ would be nice too. 🙂

so the headline “Nexus 5 Manufacturer Prospects Discussed’ are being discussed here, but there’s still zero information about the Nexus 5 from Google or anyone else, right? Thought so.

I own the Samsung galaxy nexus (2011), LG nexus (2013), Samsing G S4,
Samsung G Note 2 and about 15 other smartphones and tablets from all top manufacturers – Sony, HTC, Asus
including iOS devices – iPhone 5 and iPad 3

In my opinion Samsung destroys with their Super Amoled Plus
(I just hope they keep up the good work and don’t mess up the display dominance in the near future)

I think Samsung should make the nexus 5.
I would love to see the Nexus 5 with a full HD super amoled display and an 8 core processor.

  8. Geni says:

Or may be a dream combination composed from the collaboration of all the best manufacturers, which I guess it’s impossible:

    CPU by nVidia or Qualcomm
    Display by Samsung (full HD)
Mainboard by Asus ( with HDMI out for 4K video, Bluetooth 4 and USB 3)
Camera and Image Processor by Sony 16 MP
Stereo and Sound Processing by HTC

And please SD slot – it won’t cost you alot….
Come on Google don’t be like these guys from Apple, show them you are better ! 🙂

    1. Dave says:

There is never going to be an SD slot on a Nexus. It would remove the requirement to use Google Drive…which doesn’t really make sense for a device that is supposed to be the baseline for Google products.
