Samsung Galaxy Note 2 dwarfed by Xperia Z Ultra
The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has been the market leader since its release in the phablet sized smartphone sector, but it is now seeing some pretender’s to its crown leading up to this year’s Galaxy Note 3 release. The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is certainly dwarfed by the recently announced Sony Xperia Z Ultra but how does the rest of the specs compare?
Only a couple of years ago smartphones that featured touchscreen display’s at 4.3-inches were deemed on the large size, but now they feel tiny compared to the handsets now being released especially to the likes of the Note 2 and Xperia Z Ultra.
Display
The new kid on the block features a 6.4-inch Full HD display with a pixel density of 344ppi that compares to the Galaxy Note that has a 5.5-inch display at HD resolution with 267ppi.
Dimensions
The measurements of the two handsets come in at 179.4mm x 92.2mm x 6.5 mm and 212grams for the Sony, which compares to 151.1mm x 80.5mm x 9.4 mm and 183grams for the Galaxy Note 2, which makes the Sony 19% taller and 14% wider than the Note 2 but it is 31% thinner.
Processor and Power
Under the hood of the Galaxy Note 2 is the quad core Exynos 4412 processor running at 1.6GHz with 2GB of RAM, while the Sony has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad core unit set at 2.2GHz also with 2GB of RAM.
Storage
The Xperia Z Ultra only comes with the option of 16GB of storage with only about 11GB actually available to the user, but there is a microSD slot capable of taking up to 64GB cards, and the Note 2 has 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB storage options that can also be expanded up to 64GB via micro SD.
Operating System
The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is currently sitting on the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean OS and should soon be seeing the 4.2.2 JB update which is the version of Android that the Sony will ship with.
Cameras
Many new smartphones are being released now with 13-megapixel shooters on the back but the new Sony will only feature an 8-megapixel unit paired with a 2-megapixel front facer, and the Samsung also has an 8-megapixel shooter on the rear with a 1.9-megapixel around the front.
Battery
The Galaxy Note 2 has long been praised for its great battery life from its 3,100 mAh power pack that compares to the 3,000 mAh unit on the Sony.
Sony’s new phablet device does have dust and waterproofing amongst its armoury but you have to wonder how easy it will be to hold in the hand due to its dimensions and squarer form factor, especially compared to the Note 2 with its more rounded build.

It may be if you insist on having great one handed usability. Other than that, no way to know for sure before trying it out, photos can be very deceiving. But it will look odd if you make phone calls the traditional way without a bluetooth headset.
In any case, I would certainly choose Z Ultra over Note 2(or even Note 3 probably).
Large screen around 6.5 inch is a big market for the people have used tablet and advance smartphone both, one you can not carry all time and other you can not enjoy because of small screen. You need something like 6.5 screen which can be hostled in the belt and remains with you all the time, offcourse can be used like phone too. SONY Xperia Z Ultra looks much ahead, people tired of these plasticy design and big round corners. There is a specific big market of the people wanting to write or sketch on screen, Z ultra’s anything is stylus is phenominal and a galaxy note killer feature. CARELESS use by providing dust and water proof design is other killing feature.
Absolutely to big (screen & overall size) & u should really b comparing the Note III to the xperia ultra. Note III 5.99″ SCREEN & a twitch smaller & lighter than Note II. Also SnapDragon 800 processor @ 2.3ghz, with an Adreno 330 gpu. & 3 gigs of dual channel ram. As my banker said, bigger is NOT always better. Note III will still b leader of the pack. Hello.
The Sony isn’t too big for me, I’m not sure it is big enough yet.
I have never used any device “one handed” and think that is an old Blackberry marketing thing that stuck, that has minimal value.
I want functionality and i need a screen big enough to actually read what is on a website.
I can’t believe Sony that is known for beautiful product design came out with a phone that looks like the motorola droid original, a design of 1950’s russian tanks. Very functional but butt ugly.
You are comparing last year Galaxy Note 2 model with this year Xperia Z Ultra model. Wait until Sept for the Galaxy Note 3, then compare the models release in the same year 2013. That is only couple of months away. c
