Nexus 5 basic design with realistic specs

#

The Google Nexus 5 smartphone is still somewhat elusive, despite being one of the most hotly anticipated devices of the year. It does seem likely that the official launch of the phone won’t be too much further away now though, and today we want to offer you one idea of what it could possibly look like. Take a look at this Nexus 5 with a basic design and realistic specs.

Yesterday we published an article summing up what we know and don’t know about the Nexus 5 so far, so check that out if you would like to see more. We should point out that the Nexus 5 we’re showing you today is a concept design of the phone. Nevertheless it’s sometimes interesting to take a look at potential designs and specs, and this concept is perhaps more realistic than a recent concept we showed readers.

This new Nexus 5 concept comes with some expected features and specs that include a 2.25GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, Adreno 330 graphics, a 5.2-inch Full HD IPS Plus display, 2GB of RAM, and 16, 32 or 64GB of internal storage.

It also has a 10-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization and 1080p video capture at 60fps, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, and a 3100 mAh battery, while it runs the Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie operating system. Other inclusions are Gorilla Glass 3, NFC, and Bluetooth 4.0.

Although we feel the genuine Nexus 5 is more likely to feature a Snapdragon 600 processor rather than the 800 variety, the majority of these imagined specs are pretty sensible, and not too over-the-top. Certainly if the Nexus 5 does include a Snapdragon 800 rather than the 600, this would go down very well indeed with potential customers.

The design of this concept Nexus 5 also realistically looks like something we might expect of the real deal, with not too much in the way of bells and whistles but certainly decent enough. It’s described as weighing 139g and as you can see, has very slim bezels and what looks to be an LED notification light.

This latest Nexus 5 design comes from @TechyTee at DeviantArt, and we’d be very interested to find out what you think of this design and imagined specs. Would you like to see the authentic Nexus 5 unveiled looking like this? Do the specs of this concept live up to your expectations for the Nexus 5, or maybe far surpass them? Let us know with your comments.

    Nice design but can’t help disliking concepts. More often than not they are completely off, and they have no bearing on what the actual product will turn out to be.

  2. Leon Philips says:

    Nexus 4 looks better than this =/…5.2″ is too much for a smart phone…5″ or 4.9″ is more than plenty. The top looks not too bad, but the bottom looks like it belongs to another phone. The speaker should be at the bottom where the nexus 4’s charging port is, much liek iphone, the ear speakers should be where it was on nexus 4, the from camera should be higher, so you can scrunch the screen up a little higher.

    1. newsjunkieintl says:

      Get a clue. It’s the overall dimensions, not just the screen. The LG G2 5.2″ is SMALLER in height and width than the Sony Xperia 5.0″, due to super-slim bezel. The Nexus 5 will be based on the LG G2, have a 5.2″ screen but be SMALLER than some 5.0″ smartphones.

      Why would you want a 5.0″ screen, when you can have a smaller phone with a 5.2″ screen? 🙂

      1. Leon Philips says:

        Well if the bezels are slimmer then not a problem, but from this picture it doesnt look like its got slim bezels, I wouldnt mind having the same design as the nexus 4 with slimmer bezels, the phone is just top of the line sexy. This concept here just looks like they’re trying too hard.

        Are you spamming ever article with this useful information? It’s like every article I go to…. I’ve been telling people that complain about the screen size the same thing! lol It’s only 1/4″ taller, and 1/8″ wider than a Razr HD!

  3. Deerrrrppp says:

    Retards.. HUURRR DURRR DA SPEEKER DONT LOOK GOOD DUURRRRR…

    and lets not forget, SPEAKER SHOULD BE AT BERRTTEERMMMM LIEK A IPHONE DERP DERP

    ans everyone’s favourite, EWWW DER CERVES ARE KERVEE. I NOT LIEK CERVEES SO GIANT ANA SO UGLY DERRRRPPPP

    Well there you have it folks, 3 retards that have learned how to type! Congratulations!

  4. Zac Curtis says:

    its more likely gonna be based off the moto x and its 4,5 amoled design which i feel is a nice balance. (5.2 is next galaxy) I think it will have the same features the moto x has like active voice control and also maybe active notifications hence the need for amoled screen, led lights on phones seem dated now days. new phones will feature screen that take up 90% of the suface area on the front. but there is the possibility of front speakers

    1. newsjunkieintl says:

      Moto X sucks. And Moto X is 4.7″ 720p, not 4.5″

      Nexus 5 will be based on the LG G2, which has 5.2″ 1080p. This has been decided and known since early May.

    2. disqus_giw2S4d43r says:

      The name is Nexus 5. Stating that the screen size will be 5+ inches. All Nexus products with a number affixed to the name are screen sizes meaning that this Nexus will have at least a 5 inch screen.

    3. NBM says:

      Agreed. It is probably going to be similar in form to the 4.7″ Moto X, minus the X8 system which is a Moto thing. Instead add an SD800 which also has active language processing abilities and brand neutrality, plus power, which is a bit of an expectation for a Nexus device, whether necessary or not.

  5. Appointed-Dis says:

    This phone needs to have a holographic screen, 10 billion petabyte of ram, infinite storage, a human brain processor and at least have the speakers on the bottom like an iphone.. I guess I’ll just have to make do with this outdated technology they are trying to peddle to us.. #sigh

    1. newsjunkieintl says:

      NONE are pure fantasy and are quite realistic when looking at past Nexus phones. The Nexus phones historically compete and beat current specs of top smartphones on the market at the time it is released. At this point in time, the LG G2 on which the Nexus 5 will be based has almost the exact same specs like the Snapdragon 800. Samsung and Sony have announced updated phones to be released this fall, which also feature Snapdragon 800. If those phones have that CPU, so will the Nexus 5.

    2. John Zampier says:

      The G2 likely costs LG $250-$350 to make. You don’t think it will be even cheaper when Google slightly redesigns the phone and sells it near cost like they did with the Nexus 4?

  6. hzd says:

    Why does everyone want active notifications ? I dont get it a small led is more elegant and uses less battery regardless of what anyone says you have to call the notification icon turn part of the screen on and off e.c.t a contextual LED is way better.

    I like this concept, apart from the bottom looks like they ran out of inspiration.

    Snapdragon 800 I doubt will happen more than likely a 600 to keep the price down a 5inch screen is just about Barrable but 4.7 is the sweet spot.

    LTE / QI / bt4.0 / WiFi g/n/b / IR and dual speakers like iPhone / g2 for gods sakes there is no excuse for poor speakers these days.

    As for camera 8mp is plenty those after a good camera buy a camera.

    1. newsjunkieintl says:

      Luckily, Google is not going to listen to you 4.7″ people. 5″ is only bearable?

      It’s not the screen size you hold, it’s the overall dimensions/. The LG G2 5.2″ is SMALLER in height and width than the Sony Xperia 5.0″, due to super-slim bezel. The Nexus 5 will be based on the LG G2, have a 5.2″ screen but be SMALLER than some 5.0″ smartphones.

      _________
      5″ 1080p, Sony Xperia Z:
      5.47 x 2.80 x 0.31 inches (139 x 71 x 7.9 mm)

      5.2″ 1080p, LG G2:
      5.45 x 2.79 x 0.35 inches (138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9 mm)

      Bigger screen, but not as tall or as wide. Only 0.04″ thicker, probably due to bigger battery in the LG G2. For reference, a U.S. nickel is 0.08″. So, half a nickel “thicker”, and the other dimensions are SMALLER.)
      _________

      Why would you want a 5.0″ screen, when you can have a smaller phone with a 5.2″ screen? 🙂

  7. newsjunkieintl says:

    You are getting closer to the truth. If you look at last year’s Nexus 4, INTERNALLY it was the fraternal twin of the LG Optimus G is was based on. Same CPU, same GPU, same display, same RAM, same camera, same battery. So, this year look at the LG G2 on which the Nexus 5 will be based. It will have those same specs:

    * 5.2″ 1080p display (with super slim bezel so phone dimensions are SMALLER than some * 5.0″ phones)
    * Snapdragon 800
    * 2GB RAM
    * 13MP rear camera
    * 2.1MP front camera
    * 3000 mAh battery

    1. nvitone23 says:

      hey man, just wanna let you know that there is indeed a Moto Nexus in the works via a very good source of mine. May not be the only Nexus though so there is still the possibility of the LG nexus 5, but it may be a Nexus 4 (v2) like some rumors have suggested.

      1. newsjunkieintl says:

        Well, LG is doing the Nexus 5.

        But would Google put out 2 different Nexus phones in a year (possibly by Motorola)? Let’s discuss that.

        While Google in the past has mentioned wanting to do multiple versions of Nexus phone in one year — using different manufacturers — I really don’t see that happening. However, that is more my opinion (based on fact and market conditions), and Google may surprise me. Here’s why it does not seem to make sense:

        1) Up to now, Google has only made one Nexus smartphone per year as an Android developer showcase phone. While it usually matches or beats the specs of the current Android smartphones on the market at the time, it’s also for prestige and to influence design. Unless the 2nd Nexus exactly matched the specs, why would they sell an also-ran?

        This is one of the reasons why they immediately dump previous year’s Nexus when the new one is released. They are not like Apple and sell the previous year’s model’s at a discount, because you are already getting the Nexus phone at a severe discount! And when the new Nexus phone is released, the old one is now outdated by current standards. It would be hard to have TWO developer showcase phones, from two different manufacturers. One either would not have as good a build, or would have a different camera… One would be an “also ran”. (What if Motorola put out a really shoddy phone? The Nexus brand would take a hit.)

        2) There’s already choice. For people who don’t like the screen size of the Nexus 5 or lack of SD card slot or whatever, there’s the Google Edition (stock vanilla) versions on Google Play market of the quad core HTC One (4.7″ 1080p) and Samsung Galaxy S4 (5.0″ 1080p). Yes, they are not as inexpensive as the official Nexus smartphones, but for people who REALLY, REALLY want a smaller screen (so they can’t see content as well!) or itch for an SD card, those options ARE already available from Google. 🙂

        3) Google does not make any money on the Nexus smartphones. In fact they may lose money. While the Nexus phones are exciting and usually match/beat the hardware specs of the current Android smartphones on the market at the time, Google makes them for prestige and to influence design — not for profit. (This is another reason why they do not continue to sell previous year’s models like Apple does. Why continue to lose money on old phones?)

        With the Gen 3 Galaxy Nexus and the Gen 4 Nexus 4, they only charged $299/$350 (depending on internal memory) for what matched or beat the specs of any other smartphone available at that time, period. There’s a REASON why the Google Edition (stock Android) versions of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One cost $600 – $650. Google is not subsidizing the price. 🙂 Why would Google want to lose money on TWO different Nexus phones per year? How does that benefit Google?

  8. NBM says:

    A Snapdragon 800 seems highly believable to me because it has built in active language processing abilities (touch-less control), like Motorola’s X8 system but more neutral in terms of manufacturing/branding.

    The Nexus line isn’t made to compete with profitable flagships, but to set a standard for the next generation of android devices. It may very well stay at 4.7″ but if the resolution increased to 1080p, then the adreno 330 paired with the 800 would be well suited to drive the display.

  9. Clay Ginn says:

    IF it’s Moto making it I don’t think it will have an IPS screen. I think Moto got that right on the Moto X. I like the IPS screens better but the battery saving of being able to only light up a few pixels for the notification and or clock is huge. Moto also commented that the chip system and be used on any main chip. So the always listening could be part of the standard android (hopefully with a setting). My other wants is 802.11ac and wireless charging.

  10. ben7337 says:

    I don’t see why the Nexus 5 would use a Snapdragon 600 SoC, that 600 has the same adreno 320 found in the S4 pro, sure it is a bit faster, the same can be said for the krait 300 cores over the 200 cores. However overall the performance gains would be marginal over the nexus 4 at best. I think the 800 is necessary to have any significant performance gains to make the phone seem worthwhile. They used high end last year for the SoC and will do so this year as well.

    Also, the 64GB storage is just dreaming. I am thinking 8 and 16 again, or hoping for 16 and 32GB. Anything beyond that would be too expensive and not really google’s style for loving the cloud.
