#

The Nexus 7 (2013) made by Asus was released last summer. It has been a huge hit with consumers but now faces extra competition in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 that will release later this quarter. Today we’re looking at the Google Nexus 7 vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 in a specs overview.

We’ll highlight the key specs and other details for the WiFi versions of these two smaller-sized tablet devices, to show what they have to offer and how they compare. Please note the Nexus 7 is also known as the Nexus 7 2, while the Galaxy Tab 4 has also been announced in 8.0 and 10.1-inch sizes

Processors
The Nexus 7 is powered by a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor and Adreno 320 graphics, while the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 has a 1.2GHz quad-core processor although Samsung has not yet specified the GPU.

Display
The Nexus 7 has a 7-inch IPS LCD display with resolution of 1920 x 1200 and 323 ppi. The Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 has a 7-inch TFT display, this time with a resolution of 1280 x 800 and at 216 ppi.

RAM and Storage
There’s 2GB of RAM for the Nexus 7 and it comes in internal storage models of either 16 or 32GB (non-expandable). On the other hand the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 has 1.5GB of RAM and either 8 or 16GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD to 32GB.

Camera Set-up
The Nexus 7 carries a 5-megapixel rear camera with autofocus and 1080p video capture, as well as a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera. The Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 has a 3.15-megapixel rear camera with 720p video recording capability, and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera.

Battery
A 3950mAh battery juices the Nexus 7, but the battery capacity for the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 has not yet been specified.

Operating System
Many people love Google Nexus devices because they run pure vanilla Android, and the Nexus 7 is upgradable to the latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat OS. The Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 will release running Android 4.4.2 KitKat, although this is skinned with Samsung’s TouchWiz UX UI.

Dimensions and Weight
The Nexus 7 measures 200mm x 114mm x 8.7mm and weighs in at 290g. The Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 measures 186.9mm x 107.9mm x 9mm and weighs 276g.

Pricing
The Nexus 7 is priced at £199 for the 16GB version or £239 for the 32GB option. Pricing for the new Galaxy Tab 4 range has not yet been announced.

Obviously this comparison doesn’t take features and user experience into account as the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 is not yet available, plus design preference may also come into any decision between the two. However, it will give you an insight into how the older Nexus 7 stands up against the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0.

It will be interesting to see the pricing that Samsung comes up with for the Galaxy Tab 4 line-up, as this could make a real difference in which you might choose. Are you thinking of purchasing the Google Nexus 7 now, or the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 when it hits the shelves?

The Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 was powered by the Marvell pxa 986 1.2 GHz dual core, which was severely underpowered and caused it to be painfully slow. The Tab 4 7.0 sounds like its going to have the Mediatek 1.2 GHz quad core, which will also have the power vr SGX 544 GPU which will be a lot more capable, but the APQ8064 S4 Pro quad core and Adreno 320 has proved to be the most impressive tablet I’ve ever owned, and continues to gladly take anything I throw at it. Right before the new nexus comes out I’m going to overclock the CPU to 1.89GHz ×4 and the GPU from 400MHz to 540 and really see what this amazing little tablet can really do.

What really dissapoints me is that Galaxy Tab has a pure 7 inch display with mechanical buttons under the screen while for Nexus the buttons take the useful space of a still small 7 inch display, what visually makes it look even smaller.
