The new Philips I966 Aurora is a Quad-HD powerhouse

#

You might know Philips thanks too all of its home appliances, electronics products, and other consumer electronics, but chances are you don’t know the brand because of its smartphones. The company, while having some smartphones in its portfolio, is not that well known in a landscape dominated by names like Apple, Samsung, HTC, Motorola, Sony, LG, and the rest (we’re quite sure we forgot someone, but it is just an example enumeration). Well, now, thanks to the I966 Aurora, it will not only be easier for you to remember (and recognize) Philips as a smartphone maker, but the aforementioned device might even have you jealous of your friends who might own one.

The Philips I966 Aurora is the company’s first smartphone to pack a Quad-HD display. This means that it has a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels, which is identical to the resolution of the LG G3, which was making waves at the time of its introduction thanks to the high resolution it packs (more recently, other manufacturers have caught up to a point where Quad HD is the definition of a flagship in many circles).

That Quad HD screen is 5.5-inch big, but before you start drooling over its display and looks, you should know that the I966 Aurora does not run Android, which might be a turn off for many. Instead, Philips has equipped the phone with Aliyun OS, a platform which is destined for devices sold in China.

However, the rest of the spec sheet is compelling, and it is a real flagship: the phone is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5 GHz (like the most recent Sony Xperia Z3), has 3GB of RAM, as well as 32GB of internal storage. There’s also a fingerprint scanner, like on the iPhone 5s / iPhone 6 / iPhone 6 Plus, or the Galaxy S5/Note 4, a 20.7MP camera (the same as on the Xperia Z3, made by Sony), in tandem with an eight megapixel front-facer camera. The battery is one of 3,000 mAh, and radio capabilities include LTE network compatibility.

Is the lack of Android a showstopper for you? Would you buy this phone if it ran Google’s platform? Let us know of your thoughts!
