Huawei refreshes the Huawei P8 Max and cuts the price

#

The Huawei P8 Max is one of the larger handsets out there, and it certainly walks that fine line between slate and smartphone. It wasn’t too expensive to begin with, but it has just gotten cheaper thanks to a new Huawei P8 Max variant.

We’ve seen a number of smartphones get “refreshed” towards the end of the year, as manufacturers do away with their old designs and get ready for 2016. Huawei is joining the likes of HTC, Sammy and the rest of the pack with their new Huawei P8 Max variant, which is still a giant but cheaper this time around due to some changes under the hood.

The new Huawei P8 Max largely looks like the old Huawei P8 Max, so you’re getting a massive 6.8-inch panel with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 and a speedy 2.2GHz octa-core chip. The RAM stays the same as well, so you can expect 3GB but the storage capacity gets cut in half to 32GB. The rest of the Huawei P8 Max variant specs will be familiar with a 13MP/5MP camera combo, 4G LTE, and a 4,360mAh battery. It will run EMUI 3.1 out of the box, which is based on Android 5.1

The original Huawei P8 Max debuted with a price tag of around €549, but the variant will be a slight bit cheaper. The handset is priced at 2,888 Yuan, which shakes out to €424 — a significant savings if you can live without the additional storage and the silver color.

Hmm…I’d like to be able to buy a genuine UK (or European) config P8max from a major supplier (having owned 3 other Huaweis over recent years – G300, G510 and Ascend Mate), but Huawei seem to be increasingly making a habit of launching lots of phones, confusing potential customers and then NOT actually selling the more interesting ones through normal retail channels. The P8 Max’s on Amazon seem to be grey imports (with probably Chinese configurations in whole or partm – I don’t want to take that risk). I am increasingly regarding Huawei announcements of new products as “works of fiction” in terms of UK release (to any reliable timetable or even at all). Disappointing! I also note that you don’t even mention Huawei on your drop down list of phone manufacturers, suggesting to me that you don’t take Huawei that seriously either!

A UK-specific P8 Max simply does not exist. Huawei UK has announced both P8 and P8 Max UK Release months ago but the P8 Max is never launched. The same goes for the dark grey P8 Max – none exists apart from the early prototypes.

Thanks for the clarity, Roland. I suspected as much. Your point about there being only prototypes is particularly interesting. In the early days (when the G300 was first launched), I thought there might just be an emerging game changer in the UK market, but Vodafone UK seem to have abandoned their handsets (and now source their own branded phones from ZTE) and other UK retailers seem to have slimmed down their Huawei offering for whatever reason. While they may ship a lot of units in their home market(s), which I can now see seems to deceptively flatter the Huawei brand, they just don’t seem to have sufficient marketing maturity or (crucially) actual product delivery integrity to make much headway here. And the Huawei manufactured YouView TV box I got was an absolute joke – it never worked properly. People still look at my Huawei Ascend Mate with initial curiosity due to it’s useful screen size, but they shy away away from buying Huawei as the level of trust in the brand just isn’t there. It seems like the latest saga (P8max non-delivery) reinforces this view, at least in the UK. More delivery substance and less never ending product launch “flim flam” from Huawei would help them.
