Motorola Droid Bionic owners get ready to cheer, ICS update approved

Here at Phones Review we’ve been chronicling the saga of the Motorola Droid Bionic and its long awaited Android ICS update for some time. While many device owners are already downloading Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Droid Bionic owners are still waiting for their first taste of Ice Cream Sandwich. Well, all of you Motorola Droid Bionic owners get ready to cheer, as it seems that Motorola and Verizon have finally got their acts together and the ICS update for the Droid Bionic has now been officially approved.

We’ve been following the sorry tale of the ICS update since Motorola first confirmed that it was coming to the Droid Bionic and that was back in December 2011! After many months of waiting Motorola finally informed Droid Bionic users that the update would roll out in Q3 and there were plenty of owners who were disappointed and felt let down that the update was taking so long to come to them. Especially bearing in mind the update, even at that point, was set to arrive many moons after other smartphone users got the upgrade for their device.

A few weeks ago we learned that the update was now pushed back to Q4 and discussed the frustration that many Droid Bionic were feeling at the lack of any certain news on the ICS update for the phone. We had a huge response to this article with over 200 readers’ comments that made their dissatisfaction with the situation very clear. Finally last week we brought the news that the ICS update might be closer as people were being asked to take part in soak tests, usually a good sign that an OS update is on the way fairly soon. Today though we have even better news as we can now tell you that the ICS update for the Motorola Droid Bionic has now been approved.

The official support docs from Verizon show the 4.0.4 ICS update as build 6.7.246 and the fact that these have now been uploaded means that the rollout of ICS for your Droid Bionic should now be only days away from beginning. According to Droid-Life it’s a 368MB download and some of the features and improvements you’ll see with the upgrade include swipe-able notifications, improved multitasking, brand-new lockscreen, more of a pure Google Android look and much, much more.

We reckon there will be more than a few of our readers delighted to hear this news and can hardly believe ourselves that ICS is finally coming to the Droid Bionic after all this time. We’d like to hear what readers feel about this. Are you one of those who was feeling pretty angry about the delay and this has come too late to make you change your mind about the way Motorola and Verizon handled this? Maybe you’re just pleased to hear that finally ICS is heading your way? We’d also like to hear from any of you when you finally receive the upgrade to give us an idea of when the rollout has actually started. Let us have your comments on this.

If this is really true, Ill deactivate my IPhone 4 I bought out of contract and reactivate my dusty old Bionic. I just couldn’t deal with a lot of the issues the Bionic had when it was first released and needed a phone that didn’t lose data signal every 5 minutes. Does anyone know if the LTE signal dropping (Verizon) was ever resolved with this phone, and if not, can we expect ICS to fix it?

    1. John says:

yes, the drop signal will be fixed. I’m running the leak that came out in July or August and that fixed the issue. The problems I have experienced are bad battery life, and no flash, which by now should be fixed.

Too late! I already upgraded my Bionic to ICS myself without rooting it. It’s too late anyways. It doesn’t change the way I feel about Verizon or MOTOCRAP treating their customers like shite! My next phone and all others WON’T be made by Motorola that’s for sure! Sorry, they are a day late and a dollar short.

I’m still upset. I get the Bionic is not the Flagship anymore, but months late and no word? I downloaded the leak, and I have experienced far less problems since. So Verizon wanting a high quality update is a joke, if that is the case then why was the phone broken since day one?
The only way Moto can get my respect back is updating us to Jellybean in a much more timely manner, and giving that $100 credit to boot. Even if these conditions are met, I’m probably going with a Nexus device or a company with a better track record, like Samsung.

I was ready to ditch the Bionic b****, but I think I’ll wait to see what happens. But no matter how good the upgrade is and what it may improve on the functionality of the Bionic, I will be trying a HTC or Samsung phone next time I upgrade my phone.

Whats the point of even caring anymore? Big deal, we sit here like cattle waiting to be fed for an upgrade to our phones and yet it is still out of date being all others are getting the jellybean update. I bet Motorola is just blowing smoke up our butt about jellybean updates just to shut us Bionic owners up. They really dropped the ball on this entire phone. A few weeks after I bought the Bionic, the Razr comes out with ICS and the Bionic was just lost in the shadows. Motorola will NEVER see another dime from me and I am also thinking about paying the fee to drop Verizon, this whole circus has left a bad feeling in my gut, there is other companies that would be happy to have my hard earned cash!!

  6. Almost makes me want to go back to Apple. I guess I wasn’t really concerned about this but after getting the update then looking up what was updated then also reading stuff like this and how poorly I didn’t know I was treated as a customer I’m a little P.O.’d.
