Smartphones turned into WiFi bridge via WalkingHotSpot

Apparently, 3G smatrphones equipped with WiFi may be pulling a double shift as a mobile hotspot if carriers can be convinced by TapRoot Systems’ new WalkingHotSpot software. WalkingHotSpot is only currently available for Windows Mobile and Symbian S60 handsets.

WalkingHotSpot consists of a client application installed on the handset which in turn “bridges” the handsets 3G to a number of WiFi linked clients which do not require any special configuration, and a server application which is then used to control and manage subscriber accounts, collect subscriber usage info, and authenticate WalkingHotSpot clients and devices.

WalkingHopSpot is only available to carriers, although no announcement has yet been made concerning operators who have invested in the system.
