Nokia Siemens doubles the EDGE speed

Today Nokia Siemens launch their downlink Dual Carrier EDGE software bringing with it EDGE Evolution in Nokia Siemens Networks’ GSM/EDGE radio portfolio, and will offer double the data speeds up to 592 kbps to EDGE capable GSM networks allowing mobile broadband.

This solution should be available as a software upgrade as of Q3 08. Nokia Siemens also has plans for a step further introducing the so called EDGE 2 which should further boost users up and downlink performance. With speeds expected of up to 1.2 Mbps, and should double speed of up to 473 kbps which will quadruple the capabilities of EDGE today.

EDGE Evolution is based on the 3GPP release 7 standard, and by 2015 Nokia expect to live in a broadband-IP world of 5 billion users always on. The Head of Radio Access Business Unit Nokia Siemens Networks, Ari Lehtoranta says: “By 2015, we expect to live in a broadband-IP world with five billion people ‘always on’ and therefore Nokia Siemens Networks is committed to protecting customer investments and continue to implement leading EDGE technology. Dual Carrier software upgrade is an easy and extremely cost efficient step to bring broadband user experience to GSM/EDGE networks”
