Orange HTC Desire Android 2.2 Update Problems and Review

Yesterday we told you about the new roll out of the HTC Desire Android 2.2 Froyo update and that it is now ready to download and install, well according to our readers comments many of you are not seeing the update.

You have no doubt been to Settings > About Phone > System Software Updates > to see if it is there and have not been successful, apparently the new update would bring new features such as HTML 5 support and turning your handset into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.

If you visit TwitLonger you will see a message that says, “@CKrypt1 Froyo is available to everyone on a HTC Desire on Orange UK. It mightn’t always appear on your updates straight away due to the amount of traffic going through HTC’s servers”.

Here are a few comments sent in to phonesreview.co.uk:

Can’t download the update. First said no update, then said there was- download failed and now it can’t find the update again?

The new features are rubbish it’s not the full froyo home screen is still the same and apps screen is not 3D.

I’ve checked on my HTC Desire whether Android 2.2 is available but I have had no luck. I have even tried ringing Orange customer support and they woman I spoke to informs me that the technical support told her that the release hasn’t happened yet and that I need to contact HTC directly! Is the news of the release of Android 2.2 true or doe Orange not have a clue what is going on? I think it’s the latter!

I just checked via Settings > About Phone > System Software Updates > and it told me that my system was already up to date, no updates to install. I checked the kernel and it’s still on version 2.1 update 1.

Please do let us know if you have received the Orange HTC Desire Android 2.2 aka Froyo update, we would also like to know if you have experienced any problems at all with the update itself (If you have it that is).

ORANGE 2.2 FROYO HAS SOME MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH THE WIFI CONNECTION ONCE UPDATED. I GOT THE UPDATE 2 DAYS AGO AND SINCE THEN HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO CONNECT TO MY HOME NETWORK!!! ALSO HAVING BAD CONNECTIONS TO 3G. I HAVE BEEN IN TOUCH WITH ORANGE TECH, AND THEY HAVE CONFIRMED THEY ARE RECIEVING ALOT OF CALLS WITH THE SAME ISSUES. MY QUERY HAS BEEN ESCALATED TO HTC AND I AM AWAITING AN ANSWER OR RESOLUTION, I THINK THE PROBLEM WITH ANDROID IS THEY HAVE TOO MANY HANDSETS AND CANT APPLY ONE UPDATE TO ALL, IF THEY HAVE ONE HANDSET LIKE APPLE WE WOULD HAVE ALL THESE ISSUES. I THINK NOW THAT THE DESIRE IS NOT THE BEST COMPETITOR AGAINST THE IPHONE!!! WHAT DO YOU THINK?
IF YOU OWN AN UNBRANDED HANDSET….THEY HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS AT ALL.

Having the same trouble here. I've been banging on about how great the desire will be after the 2.2 update to all my militant iphone-owning friends. I've already had to put up with constant delays, then when it is supposed to be available, my phone tells me it's up to date!

What I've found odd throughout all of this is all of the updates from the orange coming from some chap called Connor via Twitter for christ's sake! Why aren't these things broadcast officially on their website! It seems that you get great attention and care from orange when you're a new customer or looking to renew your contract, but the minute you have signed you're life away for 18 months/2 years, they're nowhere to be found!

I want my frigging update, Orange. Now!

If you are running software version number 1.22.61.1 then you already can update your device to Android 2.2 (2.17.61.2).

Your phone should automatically search for software updates, but if it hasn’t, you can manually download this update as follows: From homescreen – Menu Key > Settings > About phone > System software updates > Check now. The update might not appear straight away due to the amount of traffic on HTC’s servers.

If you are running software version number 1.15.61.10 then HTC has recently advised us you will first need to update your devices to 1.22.61.1.

HTC will be making the 1.22.61.1 update available early next week. Once you have updated to 1.22.61.1, you can then update to 2.17.61.2 via the method described above. To check to see which software version your device is running. From homescreen – Menu Key > Settings > Software information. The number you require is listed as the fifth entry and is labelled “Software number”.

When they said early next week, last week, did they mean this week, next week or the week after that because it is now mid week. This is to do with the update that requires an update to work the update to 2.2?

Just another abismal show from orange, I have contacted all 3 parties involved (Android, HTC and Orange), HTC and Android say they have passed the updates on eventually to Orange, but Orange tech support are not even aware there is a problem. WAKE UP ORANGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. scussons says:

I just spoke to someone at orange and they told me that people running 1.15.61.10 will never be able to update to 2.2, as they have no plans to release the 1.22.61.1 update.

Fact orange build 1.15 cannot be upgraded to 1.22 as it would require major rework. This is in an orange tech email.1.22 upgrade is only compatible with unbranded handsets. upgrade stops WiFi working on branded phones. Handsets with 1.22 installed are ok. only way upgrade to froyo can be made from 1.15 is to debrand and install 1.22. Orange estimate rework would take until 2011. Not viable due to costs. By the time delay will be announced most customers will be changing upgrading phone.

I was in the same boat as most people; my Orange Desire came with software version number 1.15.61.10. I managed to upgrade to version 1.22.61.1 on 2nd October. The upgrade takes about 10 minutes and backs up and restores all settings. There are some noticeable changes but I didn't spend much time looking for all of them because I then checked to see if 2.2 was available and it was and the download of 85 meg takes no time at all especially when using a wireless connection. On my phone the initial backup failed but the installation went smoothly. Overall it takes about ten minutes.

All your personal settings remain for example ringtones, additional photos albums if you have created them etc. There are some noticeable changes or improvements. I have not found them all. The Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Mobile etc widgets have changed colour. The Internet defaults to an Orange page (but can be changed) and the original bookmarks for Orange etc have returned but can easily be deleted. Things like the Stocks have switched themselves on so need to be switched off in the Sync menu. I have noticed there is more internal phone storage available. Not a huge amount, 20+ megs, well at least that’s what I had extra from before the upgrade. There are some extra options available within the some of the menus. You can use BBC iPlayer as Flash 10.1 is installed. Within the messages it now shows the number of messages you have for that particular contact in brackets which is nice I suppose. Text messaging, Gmail, and Internet now have the voice input option on the keyboard which works pretty well and is a welcome bonus.

I am sure there is a lot more but you will all get there in the end and soon by the looks of it.

Have you had any email issues? – My mail vanishes from my phone (pop account not gmail) as soon as my laptop has downloaded the mail. – seems a common HTC issue

  9. PAF says:

yes had problems cannot use wifi hotspot ,cannot store e-mails they disappear after a few minutes, apps keep running browser very jerky and cannot kill internet without force stopping can only store a few apps on sd card(not many) signal strength indicator says better signal now but not really in reality(an indicator can say anything it doesn,t make it so remember the iphone Orange no help at all they say I chose to do the update. This was my first smartphone and i was really pleased with it until orange got their hands on the 2.2 update now it,s back to being a mediocre phone with a mind of its own,by the way my friend has this phone not on orange and his works fantastic even with the update

    1. tomssi says:

Did you manage to get any of those issues sorted? I have the same problems since the update and havent had much joy speaking to orange. Tethering has also stopped working which is a major issue for me, I would rather roll back to 2.1 if that is possible, at least everything worked.

  10. lynnsgreensocks says:

Updated today and now the messages app doesn't work. as soon as I add a recipient from my contacts, the app freezes and then forces close. it is driving me insane!

  11. dave says:

anyone else found the android market app no longer works?. once pressed it simply says "The linked program is no longer installed on your phone".

contacted orange & pretty much got blown off with a long email that basically says orange isn't responsible

not impressed, also starting to feel like the Desire wont be able to compete with the iphone after all. probably due to orange

  12. Daniel says:

Update has left me without a reliable phone 🙁
The joys of Orange 2.2 are plenty…
like no more multitasking, yep if Im playing angry birds or setting the alarm my phone cant receive calls and unless I force them to close I cant make calls ither. Basically any app running means no calls and because apps like starting themselves only very persistant people can get hold of me.
No more gps and no more sat nav Yay
No help from Orange who tell me that these are common smart phone problems (No kidding and thats after the first tec guy told me to contact google with my problems)
HTC Desire rocks ONLY if it is not crippled with an Orange rom 🙁
