Android Gingerbread HTC Flyer Tablet Coming in March

The latest word on Android tablets is doing the rounds today, word of the first Android based tablet coming out of the HTC camp, and apparently the device is to be known as the HTC Flyer and comes sporting Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

According to an article over on Intomobile by Kelly Hodgkins, DigiTimes is reporting that HTC will deliver the HTC Flyer to US soil in March, and is expected to be an oversized version of the HTC Desire smartphone.

According to the DigiTimes article HTC is pushing out the Android based Flyer “in cooperation with a telecom carrier” although they don’t stipulate which carrier that may be, but apparently HTC’s plan is to push Flyer sales ahead of the BlackBerry PlayBook expected in March and the Motorola Xoom which is due in April.

As stated above, the HTC Flyer tablet will come out to play packing Android 2.3 Gingerbread but will be upgraded to Android Honeycomb once Google release the tablet specific operating system.

No word on any HTC Flyer pricing yet, but according to sources HTC is also planning on pushing out another 2 tablets, both packing Android 3.0 Honeycomb at launch sometime in June.

So anyone in the market for a new Android slate may want to hold off for a month or two to see what the HTC Flyer can offer against the likes of the Motorola Xoom.
