Best Buy & Mophie Recall iPod / iPhone Juice Pack: Possible Fire Hazard

Mophie and Best Buy are recalling its Juice Pack Air for the iPod touch (4th generation), iPhone 3G and 3GS, the recall has been sent out due to a possible fire hazard. Fire and overheating concerns from the external battery cases, this is in conjunction with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

We do not normally write about iPod products but thought we should let our readers know of this recall due to health and safety. Mophie announced that around about 6,118 units are included in this recall, and that the integrated circuit switch is faulty and that this is where the potential overheating issue arises.

According to CPSC, they cite that 110 reports have come in, mentioning the case gets very warm to the touch, along with 44 instances where the product experienced deformation due to heat.

Best Buy is having even more problems, with around 32,000 battery cases for the iPhone 3G / 3GS distributed under its Rocketfish brand has been subject for recall as well. Juice Packs sold between April 2010 and this past September at Best Buy and Future Shop locations throughout the United States and Canada are being recalled.

So far, 14 cases have malfunctioned so far, three with direct burns to users and four related to property damage.
