BlackBerry porn prompts UK Ofcom investigation

It appears that Research In Motion BlackBerry smartphones, known for their security, don’t appear to be all that secure when it comes to mobile porn, and here in the United Kingdom, whilst mobile operators have been able to filter such devices as the iPhone, when it comes to Blackberry they haven’t been able to do the same, and thus RIM ha been summoned to account by the UK regulator Ofcom.

According to a report by the guys over at Slash Gear by way of The Telegraph, the porn problem is unique to BlackBerry, a device that has become quite popular amongst the younger generation, and thus Research In Motion will join leading mobile operators at a summit called by Ofcom.

According to a spokesperson for Ofcom, the problem was brought to their attention and is to do with the way the BlackBerry OS works. Apparently Ofcom is quite concerned and wishes to get the matter resolved quickly.

Apparently the reason mobile operators can’t apply filters to BlackBerry smartphones is because the data flows through RIM’s own service rather than services provided by networks, although word is RIM offered UK networks their own filtering system but it was only taken up by T-Mobile.

Although the BlackBerry was once considered to be the business phone, recently the device has become very popular with teenagers with a large proportion of the UK’s 8 million BlackBerry users are now believed to be under the age of 18.
