iPhone 5 & SGS3 great expectations leads to upset

Two new smartphones releasing this year have got tongues wagging and the word ‘intrigued’ embedded into people’s minds. Yes, we are talking about the Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 aka SGS3. However the hype surrounding these phones could be getting the better of customers and great expectations could lead to upset.

Everything we know about these two smartphones, or think we know, is based on rumors, leaks, conjecture and insight but that doesn’t stop them being the most widely discussed phones. Many tech sites, including us, report on all the latest developments to keep our readers informed on what they might expect and to be fair a good deal of this turns out to be accurate. However there is a danger that if the iPhone 5 or Galaxy S3 turn up and don’t live up to the speculation then the love towards them could swiftly be killed.

If we look at what is being widely reported for the iPhone 5 or new iPhone for example, we can tell you that an increased processor to the A5X or even A6 is anticipated, along with an increased display size, improved camera and better battery power. Other things likely seem to be 4G LTE connectivity and also that it could be released on the next major operating system iOS 6. Less likely but also rumored over the last few months are features such as waterproofing, 3D support, facial recognition and more.

For the Galaxy S3 by comparison, this is expected to step up to an Exynos 1.5 or 1.8GHz quad-core processor, 4.6-inch Super AMOLED Plus HD display, a 10 or even 12-megapixel camera, the latest Android 4.0 ICS OS, LTE, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. Just some of the plentiful other additions speculated have been waterproofing, wireless charging, a ceramic backing and 3D support, although Samsung recently quashed the idea that it would include 3D.

If we look back to last year before the Samsung Galaxy S2 and iPhone 4S were released there was understandably the same huge build up. That will always happen simply because of the immense popularity of these two smartphones but inevitably not everything that has been rumored turns up on the real deal when it finally arrives and this can lead to disappointment. Remember last year when the iPhone 4S was finally unveiled, how many people were disappointed in the lack of a design change and felt really let down.

Sadly it’s a fact that you can’t please all of the people all of the time and it would be too much to expect that either the iPhone 5 or the Galaxy S3 can fulfill everybody’s expectations and tick every box on people’s wish lists. The problem comes when the hype becomes so much that the anticipation is simply too high and we can only hope that this doesn’t turn out to be the case for either of these flagship devices.

We’d really like to hear your thoughts on this dilemma. It’s natural that people will expect the latest versions of these smartphones to step up with the goods but is there a danger that we now simply expect too much? Will you be purchasing the iPhone 5 or Galaxy S3 regardless of what they feature when they finally appear, simply because their predecessors are your current phones? What for you would be the biggest disappointment for either handset if a certain specification or feature didn’t appear? Let us know with your comments.
