BlackBerry 9220 India price targeting youngsters

We’ve previously given news about RIM’S upcoming budget handset, the BlackBerry Curve 9220 and to be frank the specs weren’t exactly exciting. However that is to be expected with a low-end phone and today we have news that the price of the Curve 9220 in India is competitive and targeted at youngsters.

The Curve 9220 was released in India just a few days ago on April 19 and the price is very much aimed at the entry-level market at Rs 10,900 (that’s around US $210 or UK £130). While RIM’s BlackBerry brand has been suffering of late and is bidding to regain its popularity, India is one of the growing markets for the company and so it makes sense that RIM is developing some phones for this fast-growing market.

The Curve 9220 is the cheapest BlackBerry that RIM has ever released in India and RIM’s Managing Director for India Sunil Dutt said, “The new BlackBerry Curve 9220 offers a unique mobile experience that young Indians will love thanks to its affordable pricing and unmatched messaging and social connectivity features,” according to TechWireAsia. Some free apps from BlackBerry World are being provided with purchases of the Curve 9220 for a limited period. Examples of some of these apps include Pencil Camera, Photo Studio Pro, Ultimate Cricket and Horoscope Oracle — Follow Your Lucky Stars.

Features and specs of the Curve 9220 include an 800MHz processor, 2.44-inch QVGA display, 2-megapixel rear camera, 512MB of RAM, 512MB of internal storage expandable via microSD and running on OS 7, but there’s no 3G and RIM anticipates that most users will connect via WiFi rather than relying on a data plan. The decent battery gives 7 hours talk time or 28 hours of music playback and social features include a dedicated BBM key along with Social Feeds.
