Xiaomi Redmi 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Core Prime specs shootout

Xiaomi smartphones are hitting a sweet spot with many buyers right now as they offer real value for money. After success with the Redmi 1S and Redmi Note, the company has recently introduced the Redmi 2. This has launched in China and will be released soon for further regions and as far as price is concerned its in the same sort of sector as the Samsung Galaxy Core Prime. Today we’re offering a Xiaomi Redmi 2 vs. Samsung Galaxy Core Prime specs shootout.

Affordable Xiaomi handsets have been a real hit in many regions including India where dual SIM phones are popular, and the Redmi 2 looks set to follow suit. If you want to see our previous articles on it including comparisons against the Micromax Yu Yureka and also the Redmi 1S you can see them here. Likewise you can see our previous articles on the Galaxy Core Prime here. Let’s check out the key specs of these two phones.

Processors
Both of these phones are exactly the same on this score, with 1.2GHz Snapdragon 410 quad-core processors and Adreno 306 graphics.

Display
The Xiaomi Redmi 2 has a 4.7-inch display with resolution of 1280 x 720 and 312 ppi. The Samsung Galaxy Core Prime has a 4.5-inch display with resolution of 800 x 480 and 207 ppi.

RAM and Storage
Again there’s little between them here as they both have 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. However, this is expandable via microSD to 32GB on the Redmi 2 and to 64GB on the Galaxy Core Prime.

Camera set-up
The Redmi 2 is equipped with an 8-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, LED flash, and 1080p video capture, as well as a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. The Galaxy Core Prime has a 5-megaixel rear camera with autofocus, LED flash, and 720p video capture, and also has a 2-megapixel front-facing unit.

Battery
The Xiaomi phone has a removable 2200 mAh battery while the Samsung handset has a removable 2000 mAh battery.

Connectivity
Both phones support 3G, 4G LTE, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n with WiFi Direct and WiFi hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, and microUSB 2.0.

Operating System
The Redmi 2 is Android 4.4.4 KitKat-based with the new MIUI v6. The Galaxy Core Prime runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

Dimensions and Weight
The Redmi 2 measures 134mm x 67.2mm x 9.4mm (weight is unspecified). The Galaxy Core Prime measures 130.8mm x 67.9mm x 8.8mm and weighs 130g.

Price
This may be a decider when we hear confirmed pricing for the Redmi 2 in further regions. What we know so far is that in China it’s priced at CNY 699. That’s equivalent to around Rs. 7,100 but it’s important to remember that prices could vary by region and also retailer so it could be more expensive when it lands for India. The Samsung Galaxy Core Prime is available in India from around Rs. 9700.

Both of these phones have plenty to offer for their money, and there are some specs similarities. However, the Redmi 2 has a larger display with higher resolution, better rear camera capabilities, and a higher capacity battery, and it also looks likely to be the cheaper of the two. On the other hand the Galaxy Core Prime has a higher level of expandable storage and is a slimmer handset.

Other things to consider are the designs and builds as well as after sales-service, and you’ll want to take these factors into account when making your choice. Also of course if you want a new phone right now then you may choose the Samsung rather than wait for the Redmi 2 to arrive for sale.

When you’ve deliberated on the above we’d like to hear from you. Have you decided that you’re prepared to wait for the Xiaomi Redmi 2, or will you opt for the Samsung Galaxy Core Prime now?
