Periscope Android app problems reported

#

The massively popular Periscope app launched back in March for iOS devices, and since that time many people have been waiting for the Periscope Android app. Yesterday the Android version of the app finally appeared on the Google Play Store, gathering plenty of attention and pleasing many Android device users. However, some Periscope Android app problems are being reported.

There was plenty of demand for the Periscope app for Android, and it’s clear that many users of the new version for the Android platform are thrilled to see it make an appearance for their devices. Nevertheless we’ve received some comments and emails from readers about difficulties they are having with the app, although we’ll point out from the off that for many people the app is running smoothly. Therefore it’s difficult to tell at this early stage whether the issues are widespread or more isolated.

We’ve just taken a look at user reviews for the Twitter Periscope Android app on Google Play. We have to say that there are many commenters who love the app and are perfectly happy with how it’s working, and who have rated it with 4 or 5 stars. However, it’s fair to say that there are also numerous comments from some users who have given it low ratings. Various issues have been noted and a login problem is something that has been raised by numerous commenters.

For example one person writes, “Login issues. I’ve just installed the app and I’ve been trying to login using Twitter credentials but somehow it’s not working the way it’s meant to be.” Another commenter says, “Cannot log in on Samsung s6. Then leaves message on screen that you have to reboot to remove.” Another user comments “Can’t connect to Twitter! I can’t seem to log in with Twitter. I keep getting an endless “Logging in…” popup.” One more person writes, “Crashes with “Sorry, we’ve encountered a Loading error” on Galaxy S6. I authorize my Twitter account and then get hit with the above error accompanied by a hard crash. Thrilling.”

As well as login problems, users of the Android Periscope app are also raising other issues. For example, one commenter says, “Can’t livestream. I can see other people’s streams no problem, but when I try to stream, I get “initializing video stream” but nothing happens after that. Help?” Another comment reads, “Crashes in front camera. When I switch to the front camera it crashes. Galaxy Note 2.” Another user says, “Needs work. It will only broadcast using my mobile network and fails to connect via Wi-Fi. Made the phone run hot and utterly hammered my battery. Installed update: still fails to broadcast via Wi-Fi on Sony Xperia M2.”

Hopefully these issues and others being reported are ironed out quickly with future updates, and it would be remiss of us not to point out that the iPhone version has also been criticized by some users in the past. What we would like to get some idea of is how widespread these problems with the Android Periscope app are, so we’d really like your feedback.

Have you just started using the Periscope Android app? If so is everything working smoothly for you, and what are your first thoughts on it? Maybe you are one of those having problems with the app and could let us know what difficulties you are encountering? Drop us your comments in the box below and share your experiences of Periscope for Android.

  1. David Marquez says:

With the influx of Android users the app cannot display correctly the amount of active users and it crashes all the time. Also the people that I follow broadcast full up way more quickly so no I cannot comment at all. Without interact this app is just half of the fun. Twitter should start monetizing Periscope ASAP and pour money in to it to make it better.

    1. kennethholland says:

With a market cap of 20 BILLION, I think they can afford to spend a little money to make it work for Android. It appears they do not care.

  2. Doni says:

It works fine on my tablet, which is Kitkat… but I wish I could use it on my Jelly Bean smartphone, which it’s more mobile, not dependent on Wi-Fi, and has a better camera. So mixed feelings.

  3. Peter Muscat says:

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2. It crashes when I switch to front facing camera. This is VERY disappointing as the front camera is what I hoped to use most of the time on the app

  4. Just updated Periscope for Android to 1.0.1 – quick test whether initializing a stream showed that it now works for me (4.4.2 KitKat).

Will see if I’ve some of the other reported issues now (the 1.0.1 release notes say all of it would have been fixed).

  5. Robb says:

Doesn’t broadcast on the galaxy s4. Tried with 3 different phones. I think its a problem with lollipop as most people o know with kit kat it works with the latest. I did a full factory wipe of my phone. No dice. Might try with kit kat tomorrow. I assuming the video stream has a different handle in lollipop. Will test with Motorola nexis variety later tonight.

  6. Experiencing login problem (does not properly validate username – error message states it must include only letters, numbers & underscore | username is 11 alpha characters) on my Lollipop (5.1) Nexus 6

  7. don says:

So when I try to download it for my Nexus 7, 5.1.1 (from the computer). It gives me the message that no devices are capable of periscope. Yet my Nexus 7 is listed but in very light gray lettering. On my iPhone it only works about 10% of the time (90% it only keeps loading to infinity). Can someone help solve these two issues. Please feel free to email me suggestions at donkennedyla@yahoo.com.

  8. Becky Caldwell says:

Have a Motorola Droid Ultra. This morning the app wouldn’t stop broadcasting my stream. OMG! Had to shut down the phone, but then it showed that I broadcast for 38 minutes when I had really only been live for about 8 mins. Other issues are that I doesn’t watch a live stream very well. It’s always trying to reconnect, and it is super annoying.

  9. Ax Photo & Video says:

    Samsung S4. Android 4.4.2 I can’t livestream. When I try to stream, I get hs message: `initializing video stream´.

  10. isaanlife says:

my 1st video saved to cameraroll fine, and i have uploaded to youtube. next to saved to cameraroll, but cannot play. also cannot start a live in landscape

  11. Nathalie says:

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 and I can see the broadcast of others, but people can only hear my voice. They don’t get any image.

    1. Kim says:

I too have a Samsung Galaxy S4 and have tried a few times to do a broadcast, but it’s very grainy and the connection goes in and out a lot. The broadcasts have been so grainy I delete them. Very frustrating!

  12. Silvia says:

I can’t even get as far as downloading! I got an EE Kestrel and apparently periscope is not compatable with my device……but then nothing is!!!! Sigh

  13. Cristina says:

I Tablet Samsung with the 4.4.2 version and can transmit ok. In my S4, that the version is 5.0.1 does not open the camera and not the microphone. What to do? Thankfully.

  14. Rachel Moore says:

I can’t click the Twitter icon to tweet out my Periscope. I’ve ransacked the app to see if I’m missing a setting, but I logged in with Twitter, so I’m unsure why it’s not allowing me to use that feature. Frustrating!

  15. Tom Sartori says:

Used Periscope for the first time yesterday in my LG G4. I did I live broadcast, but it was extremely grainy and froze up at times. Switched to my LG tablet… Same problem. Switched Wi-Fi networks. Same prob. I checked other people’s streams and they were crystal clear. I have all the latest LG products and the latest android software update. What’s the problem?

    1. Jessica Rhae says:

I’m having the same problem. I researched it and it looks like the clear videos are coming from iPhones. Unfortunately, I think the Android app just sucks at this point. It’s very frustrating.

  16. Byron Dyess says:

I can not record any live broadcast on the Samsung GS4 when going live the camera looks like it is is recording live but users just get the loading screen, and when going back to the play back it just goes to the loading screen. I tested this on my wife Samsung Note 4 and it did work however the video quality was very poor. I tested the app on the iPad 4 and it worked like a beast! It seems that the app was built for iOS platform.

  17. Lukas Blecha says:

I am unable to watch almost everything. 2 secs playing, then 20 seconds “trying to reconnect”… Either on 4G or wifi. Galaxy S6 Edge.

    1. Hebert Bernardo says:

I have the exact same problem. To be fair, I have Periscope sideloaded into my Amazon’s Fire Phone. But, consider this: Meerkat works flawlessly in it!

This is clearly an issue on Periscope’s app. I’ve just updated and this annoying issue persists.

  18. Love the whole idea of this app but when I broadcast it is extremely grainy. It also will not load if not on wifi. I have checked all of my settings to ensure it can stream through my network, but it will not work. I have a Galaxy s5

  19. Nabla765 says:

Hi I’ve been using Periscope for Android, and it works smoothly.

The only issue is with the “HEARTS”:

we can SEND them, and we see them on the screen,

but they ARE NOT ADDED to the person who is broadcasting!!!

Giving those hearts was the nicest thing of this app. Please fix this bug!
    Thanks
    Julia from Italy

  20. Merrken says:

Evidently, the developers of Periscope only care about iPhone users. I have submitted several emails to them through about how the video quality on my Android Blu Studio phone is so bad, with blurred colors and a giant green bar along the bottom of each video, and I have not gotten any response. If Twitter is partnering with them, they need to get Periscope to release a better Android app!

    1. Сања Алексова says:

Same exact thing on my phone. I’ve tried to uninstall and install again and its not helping. Did you fix yours?

  21. Diane Student says:

I’ve tried several times to stream on my Galaxy S4 and viewers all report there is no video, only audio. Tried using with WiFi and same result. Very disappointing.

  22. HaPPyLiciOuS says:

I’m having exact same issue as Diane Student below. I also have Galaxy S4. Not loading..they hear me but don’t see my video. Thanks.

      1. That is false. The viewers see it with words sdrawkcab or backwards. It is not a Periscope thing. I have two Periscope accounts and 2 Samsung tablets and I am able to watch my opposite account from each one and the issue is somewhere with the phone. Anyone with a fix, please post your solution.

        Thanks!

  23. Gavin Grierson says:

I have SAMSUNG S6 EDGE running LOLLIPOP. When I run periscope over WIFI it works perfectly fine and the stream initializes.

PROBLEM comes in when I try to use it over cell data..it just freezes over cell data and nothing happens.

PLEASE NOTE when using the same above simcard in my Ipad it works fine over CELL and WIFI on IOS periscope.

So it definately seems like the issue is with ANDROID LOLLIPOP PERISCOPE APP.

  24. kennethholland says:

After trying for over a month, Periscope still does not work on my Samsung Galaxy Note 2. I can view broadcasts, but I cannot broadcast myself…when I try the app crashes. I’ve sent multiple reports and emails to Periscope and after a month finally got a reply: ‘There is a bug with Android’. Whoopdy freaking do!! Really? Man, I didn’t know that!! Why release this on Android when it obviously doesn’t work correctly. Too bad because I really wanted to use it. But you’re not forcing me to go to the iPhone. You lost another user. #fail

  25. babs318 says:

I have Samsung note 2 Verizon and when I try to flip to front camera it crashes please Help! I deleted it and reinstalled still crashing

  26. biggfelix says:

have note 4 cant see the map like iphone u can choose location around the map and pick who u like to see in that area. any idea.. on how to get it on the note 4

  27. Questement says:

I also have the Note 2 and as soon as I flip to the front camera it crashes …Ihope there is a fix for this soon… OR Iwill jhaveto find another app to do the same thing…

  28. Shannon Peebles says:

Hi I have a Samsung Note 4 and I can’t watch more than 45 seconds of a scope before it has to “reconnect” for 3-8 seconds, which puts me further and further behind the live broadcast, so any comments I make are totally out of context. I’m just about done with Periscope.

  29. Luigi Casiraghi says:

Hi, i use Periscope on my Honor 6 with android kitkat, but when I go live, my friend (expecially with iphone) see half of screen completely green and sometimes with no audio. Someone has the same problem? Thanks

    1. Christine says:

My android does that too..i can only broadcast from the back camera and when i switch to front face cam, it closes the app.. do u know if they are fixing this? Is it the app or my phone that’s causing this. Also when i am watching scopes, it closes out of the scope at all random times. I can be watching someone’s scope for 20 mins and then out of nowhere, it closes out that scope and i have to go back into the same scope. On replay, its annoying because, i cannot watch a replay fully without it closing out. Anyone else have that problem?

  30. Tania says:

On my Samsung s6, It doesn’t show anything on who’s live or the map or my followers and it just keeps loading for hours then I went to my iPhone to try and see if it works there and every 2 minutes it would say loading error try again. When it was perfectly fine before, I noticed that I would get a lot of likes but they wouldn’t show on my profile! PERISCOPE IF YOURE READING, YOU BETTER FIX THIS THING ASAP BECAUSE WHAT YOU ARE DOING IS SO UNPROFESSIONAL! GET IT DONE ESPECIALLY ON SAMSUNG!!!

  31. Gavin Grierson says:

Anyone here have a Samsung S6 running Android lollipop? I can’t initialize stream…have reported this several times to @periscopehelp but not getting any response..not good and very disappointed!

  32. Kay says:

I have the same issue, as soon as it flips to camera.. Periscope has stopped working… reported it numerous times, but no response from anyone …

  33. Sunny says:

I am liking broadcast but that hearts not adding with total number of hearts… I am using android 4.4.2 . I also try with other 6 android devices but result are the same.
Can anyone tell me how I overcome it or is that periscope bug ????

  34. Michael Mann says:

Since the landscape update on Android, my rear camera is now mirrored. This is such a disappointment as I use it to show my screen. Bad move Periscope.

    1. MarioT says:

Same problem here, but I noticed it even before the update. Portrait video is horizontally flipped, while landscape video is vertically flipped (which is even worse). I noticed some other bug, but this is definitely the biggest.

  35. disqus_YxVcB7dNQm says:

Has worked fine for last week and a half. Today, halfway through watching a friend’s periscope it loses vonnection. Then signs me out. I go through thr sign in with phone number, get charged the data fee for a txt with a code to enter and it still wouldnt let me in. Now the sign inlink wont even come up. I’ve even tried rebooting. Still nothing. Virus?

  36. jon ski says:

Smh i just downloaded the app from an android phone bought in 2014 and every time I try to sign in it boots me out with an error message saying it encountered a “loading problem” what does this mean??

  37. DrAngela Shepherd says:

I have Periscope on my Android Note 3. My Live Recording Cut Short and I CANNOT share. It says REMOVE REPLAY in red letters. I have deleted & reloaded Periscope App with the same problem. Why Am I NOT ABLE to Scope or Share my Scopes?

    1. Hmm_hmm says:

I have the exact same phone. I have so much trouble on Periscope with it, even as a viewer, I’m at the point of considering switching to Apple, even though I really can’t afford to switch.

  38. Shamal says:

Same problem here.. Just installed, Samsung S4Mini and Android 4.4.2. Portrait video is horizontally flipped, while landscape video is vertically flipped. On my side everything seems normal while recording. Very bad bug and so disappointing..

    1. Patrick Giblin says:

We have a similar problem, using a Samsung 10.1 tablet with Android 5.1.1 – everything is mirror imaged. Images appear sideways on our device, but viewers tell is it looks “normal” (besides the mirror imaging) when watching online.

  39. Elizabeth Savchuk says:

Why people cant see me? They hear me and can write messages, but it is said that internet connection is bad. The broadcast is loading. But my internet connection is perfect

  40. Honey Bee Good says:

Samsung galaxy periscope ghosting, very frustrating, it’s an app bug, customer service awful, help from periscope utterly terrible, absolutely no interest in wanting to fix the many problems. Incompetent, under staffed, unprofessional, unistaled app!!!!!!

  41. Serenity G. says:

For the entire month that I’ve had Periscope, none of my scopes work. They freeze constantly and the video/sound are delayed. People have said that I sound like a robot or just can’t hear anything at all. I know it’s not my internet connection, I have insured that all is working and all is excellent. There are no interferences as I turn off the internet on my desktop, laptop and tablet prior to getting on Periscope on my phone. I have messaged Periscope multiple times for help and I receive no response or just an automated response. I’m growing tired of not being able to scope.

  42. fishcado says:

Chats don’t show when I go live on my lg2 phone. Logged onto to my tablet and I was able to chat into the broadcast but nothing shows up on the live end.

  43. Emil Grönvall says:

I have a HTC One M9. I can stream like 5-10 minutes, then my stream goes automatic off and I come to the main menu in the periscope ap. Very Frustrating, anyone else got the same problem? Maybe the phone gets hot maybe?
