Gorilla glass, it’s the new tougher than nails glass that is making its way into the smartphone arena, and apparently the manufacturers of Gorilla glass, Corning Inc, is ramping up their investments in the glass as they predict the demand for their tech to rise.
According to an article over on The Epoch Times by Natalie Gee, Gorilla glass originates from ‘Chemcor’ which is an ultra strong glass that is used on smartphones, and notebooks and apparently according to the company’s website Gorilla glass is used in more than 100 devices and 19 brands.
Corning patented their glass way back in 1964 and it was originally used in the aviation, auto, and pharmaceutical industries and is now moving into the wider field of the smartphones with Corning predicting Gorilla glass sales to be in excess of $200 million in 2010 with estimates of roughly $1 billion by 2011.
So anyone know of any smartphones packing Gorilla glass, I know that the Dell Streak sports the toughened glass, as does the Sonim XP2, but do our readers know of any others, and just how tough is it when compared to the glass other smartphones use?
