Panasonic Smartphone Coming 2011

The Android platform on smartphones continues to expand at a great rate and there seems to be no signs of the adoption of Android slowing as Panasonic has now opted to go with the Android mobile operating system for their return to the smartphone space.

According to an article over on Android Police by Nate Kimmey and by way of Reuters, Panasonic is to offer their own smartphones based on the Android operating system in Japan next year, and in other markets in 2012.

The head of Panasonic’s mobile communications unit, Osamu Waki, said during a news conference, “We misjudged the speed at which smartphones would be taken up in the Japanese market. With the rapid shift to Android, we want to catch up quickly.”

Apparently Panasonic intends to raise their total mobile phone sales to 15 million handsets globally by the year 2015. No word on any details on the Android based smartphone yet or whether they will be high end or cheap end devices, so it’s a case of wait and see.
