Getting prepped for iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak

We’ve been closely following developments with pod2g and efforts to get the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak to release. We now know from the man himself that it is expected within the next few days and yesterday told how the jailbreak will be called Absinthe 2.0. We know how many of our readers are patiently waiting, so today we thought we’d take a look at what you can do to get prepped for the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak.

A few days ago we gave you the updated complete device list that the untethered jailbreak will work for so check that out if you want to know if it will be compatible for your device. As the public release could come at any time now there are certain things you can consider in readiness so you’re raring to go as soon as the jailbreak is made available. Some people are wondering if they should update their iOS devices to iOS 5.1.1 now or wait until the jailbreak comes out?

A helpful iDownload Blog report points out that for iOS devices with the A5 processor (ie. iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3/new iPad) the jailbreak is only supported with iOS 5.1.1. So far it’s not known if this also applies to previous devices with the A4 processor but it seems likely that iOS 5.1.1 will be required for the Absinthe 2.0 jailbreak across all devices. The recommendation then is to download the iOS 5.1.1 firmware for any devices that you intend to jailbreak and save if where you easily locate it later, maybe using different folders for different devices.

A further recommendation is that if you have the new iPad/iPad 3 then you should actually update to iOS 5.1.1 now as there is no current jailbreak for it anyway. For owners of the iPad 2 or iPhone 4S the situation is more complex. Those people might prefer to hold off on the update to iOS 5.1.1 if they have already jailbroken those devices running iOS 5.0.1 or they will be without a jailbreak until Absinthe 2.0 arrives. As this seems imminent that might not be an issue for some but remember, although all expectations are that the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 will arrive at any time, nothing is guaranteed.

Whatever you decide to do as far as updating to iOS 5.1.1 is concerned, it’s always a good idea to save your SHSH blobs. For more info or download links to iOS 5.1.1 firmware check out the iDownload Blog article at the earlier link. In the meantime we’ll be keeping our ears to the ground for the arrival of the untethered jailbreak and of course will let you know as soon as we do.

Are you waiting for the Absinthe 2.0 untethered jailbreak tool for iOS 5.1.1? We’d also be interested to hear your thoughts on the endeavors of the hackers that bring their jailbreaks to the public domain so send us your comments.
