Google Nexus 7 tablet with July 31 release date but don’t panic

We’ve been bringing readers plenty of news about the Google Nexus 7 tablet that was recently made official at Google I/O. The one thing that everybody still wants to know about is a precise release date and we have news that it has been listed as July 31. If you were hoping for it in mid-July though then don’t panic as the listed date could well be a false alarm.

This Google Nexus 7 tablet looks set to be a giant success with the newest Android OS, 4.1 Jelly Bean, a quad-core processor and reasonable pricing and we already gave you full specs here and first impressions here. It has been exceedingly well received but the only details given for a release date was sometime in mid-July. However today we learned that GameStop is to sell the Nexus 7 with pre-orders now available on its website and interestingly it was detailed with a release date of July 31, 2012. As many are geared up to get their hands on the Nexus 7 in the next couple of weeks some could feel let down at a release date at the end of July but as we said, this is by no means conclusive.

News that GameStop in the U.S. would be selling the Nexus 7 tablet came to us from Engadget but it seems that GameStop is only taking pre-orders at present for the 16GB model and not the 8GB one. This is priced at $249, the same price as Google Play will sell the device for and Engadget notes that it should still arrive around mid-July, the same time as it first becomes available through Google Play.

However when we checked the GameStop pre-order page for the Nexus 7 the release date was definitely listed as July 31. This could mean three things. Either GameStop is getting the Nexus 7 a while after the main release on Google Play, or maybe the tablet really won’t be available until July 31, or more likely the July 31 was just placed on the pre-order page for now as no precise date is yet available.

Since this we have seen a further report on Cnet that also mentions the July 31 release date at GameStop but helpfully says that GameStop still anticipates shipping in mid-July. All we can do for now then is wait and see and hope that the middle of July is when we can all get our mitts on the Google Nexus 7 tablet. Of course we should point out that if you order the Nexus 7 through GameStop you may be able to get the price discounted if trading in gaming hardware, software and accessories so that’s something else to consider. If you want to order through GameStop head to the Nexus 7 product page here.

Have you already decided to purchase the Google Nexus 7? What is it that you find most attractive about this tablet and will you be taking advantage of trade-ins at GameStop? Send your comments to let us know.
