The Google Nexus 7 tablet from Asus was finally unveiled at Google I/O last week and it’s fair to say it has managed to make a major impact already. Although we’d been posting about this Android tablet for some time it was good to see it finally made official and now, before the initial fuss has even died down, we are seeing reports of a possible Google Nexus 10 tablet.
The Google Nexus 7 has impressed many people since its reveal ahead of a release around mid-July. Not only does it have a quad-core processor and is extremely competitively priced but best of all for many Android fans is the fact that it will launch running the brand new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system. Pre-orders for the Nexus 7 have opened and a huge amount of pre-launch interest has already been shown so it seems assured that Google & Asus have a bit hit on their hands. It certainly makes sense then to capitalize on that popularity by bringing out a larger Google Nexus tablet.
The source of the Google Nexus 10 speculation is our old friend, Taiwanese newspaper DigiTimes, which has a mixed record of accurate product news. Brought to our attention by BGR, the paper reports that ‘industry sources’ say that a 10-inch Google Nexus tablet is being planned and that the touch panels for it will come from AU Optronics and also Wintek. This would make Wintek the largest supplier of touch panels to Google as the company is reported to have already shipped half a million OGS (one glass solution) panels for the Google Nexus 7.
Wintek claims to have capacity to produce 3 million medium-sized touch panels and another 5 million smaller panels so this report does have an element of plausibility. Phone Arena also points out that a 10-inch Google Nexus tablet would be a direct rival for Amazon’s rumored larger model of the Kindle Fire. It’s all rather intriguing then but no timeframe has been leaked for a possible Google Nexus 10. There’s nothing to say it might not appear later this year though, perhaps in time for the holiday season.
We reckon that with the amount of interest shown already in the Google Nexus 7 with Jelly Bean, it seems highly likely that Google would also achieve success with a larger 10-inch tablet but we’d like to hear your thoughts on this.
