Blackphone 2 release for US arrives

It’s been quite some time since we last reported on the Blackphone 2 smartphone, a successor to the original Blackphone. Security is a big feature of this device, and the company revealed some specifications of the upcoming phone at MWC in March. Now at last, the Blackphone 2 release has arrived for the US, although details have not been given for availability elsewhere yet.

The company behind the Blackphone 2 release is now selling the phone on the Silent Circle website. Although at MWC a price of $649 was given for the new phone, we thought this was slightly surprising as it was the same price as the original Blackphone. That hunch turned out to be correct, as the price of the Blackphone 2 has now been confirmed as $799.

As for specs you’re looking at a 1.7GHz Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor, Adreno 405 graphics, a 5.5-inch display with Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD to 128GB). It has a 3060 mAh battery with Quick Charge 2.0 support, a 13-megapixel rear camera with dual-LED flash, and 5-megapixel front-facing snapper.

The handset supports LTE and Worldwide 3G/HSPA+ connectivity, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, and microUSB 2.0. We mentioned at the top that the Blackphone 2 is focused on security and in this respect it runs the Android-based Silent OS. The handset is made from premium plastic (mid-frame), Mg-Al Alloy (internal), and features Gorilla Glass 3 on the front and back.

The Blackphone 2 measures 152.4mm x 76.4mm x 7.9mm and it weighs 165g. If you want to see more we’ve embedded a YouTube video below showing an introductory look at some of the software features of the smartphone. It would be good to find out your initial thoughts on the new Blackphone and its price. Could you be tempted to purchase the Blackphone 2? Why not send your comments to let us know.
