I really can’t understand why Nokia has three operating systems on the go, there’s their bulk operating system Symbian, the latest of which is Symbian^3, then there’s the Maemo OS for the Nokia N900 and then there’s the Nokia/Intel MeeGo OS.
We have some news on that MeeGo OS today in as much as according to an article over on Mobile Today, the new Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has stated that the first mobile phone sporting MeeGo will not be launched until 2011.
Apparently Elop said…” There have been various comments made at various points in time about the anticipated availability of our first MeeGo device and versions of the MeeGo software. My first impressions of our MeeGo work inspires both confidence and excitement, however it is also clear to me that our first MeeGo device will be a 2011 event.”
Elop’s announcement follows word that Nokia is restructuring which will result in the loss of 1800 jobs worldwide, and that there will be changes in their Symbian division and services along with increasing responsiveness to customer demands and cutting the time to deliver Symbian products to market.
No word on what this new Nokia MeeGo device will be like or when it will become available or obviously how much the thing will cost.
