New Apple iPhone in the making hint hidden in firmware?

It’s fairly obvious that Apple is secretly working on the next generation of their Apple iPhone, and no doubt when they are good and ready it will become public knowledge, but MacRumors has stumbled upon a snippet of solid info that confirms Apple has a major hardware revision in the works.

Apparently, the latest firmware revisions have hidden inside some nice metadata that refers to a produce code of “iPhone2, 1” which is definitely a higher number that the Apple iPhone 3G which is “iPhone1, 2.”

Furthermore, an ad network has been reporting web hits from an iPhone2, 1 so it does look to be quite real. So the question is what is iPhone2, 1?
