iPad 2 Display Problems Cause Apple To Turn To Samsung

In somewhat of a turn up for the books considering how Apple is aggressively going after Samsung in the courts over their Android gear, it seem when the chips are down and Apple has a problem with the displays on their beloved Apple iPad 2 they turn to Samsung for help.

According to an article over on Apple Insider, Chinese site DigiTimes is reporting that the largest Apple iPad 2 panel supplier LG Displays has lost some of their iPad 2 panel orders due to Apple experiencing quality issues says unnamed industry sources.

Apparently LG Display shipped somewhere between 2.5 and 2.6 million Apple iPad 2 panels in July whereas the original target was set at 4 million a month, and as a result Apple has now turned to rival Samsung and Chimei Innolux.

According to the report “LGD’s 9.7-inch panels for the iPad 2 reportedly failed to pass drop tests, during which their backlight units (BLUs) failed, the sources said, adding the panels’ yield rates were unable to meet Apple’s requirements.”

In July apparently Samsung delivered almost 2 million Apple iPad 2 panels which exceeded their monthly average of 1 million. However one source has stated, “Samsung’s Galaxy Tab has head-on competition with the Apple iPad 2 in the end market. This would prevent Apple from sourcing more panels from Samsung.”

So there you have it, looks like Apple can at least for the time being have their cake and eat it as they aren’t about trying to get virtually everywhere to ban the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, along with suing just about every Android platform manufacturer, but still they don’t mind using Samsung tech to make sure their beloved iOS slate remains available.

No doubt Samsung makes a considerable amount of money from dealing with Apple, but I would have thought that even Samsung would only take so much from Apple when it comes to all these lawsuits and it is possible that Sammy might one day tell Apple to go take a hike and find someone else to supply their tech gear, now wouldn’t that be a turn up for the books.
