eBay offloading Skype Google may step in

Under: News Date: April 7th, 2008

Skype Google

The latest whisper is that eBay are wanting to shed Skype, and that maybe Google may just want to step in and take it over. Back in late 2005 eBay brought Skype for a staggering $3.1 billion, but ever since it appears Skype hasn’t been dragging in the bucks for eBay.

Last year Skype recorded a loss, and therefore co-founder and CEO Niklas Zennstrom was given the push in October. But now online rumour has it eBay wants to offload the problem and is in negotiations with Google and either a possible outright takeover or as a partnership.

Not much details available, while Techcrunch is saying Skype is keeping quiet and not speaking to journalists on this subject at CTIA. Google already has its own VoIP service in GTalk which is a free 411 service and GrandCentral, which is a phone management service Google acquired last year as a cost of $50 million.
