Ryanair in-flight calls coming very soon on 14 aircraft

Under: Mobile Phones, News Date: October 3rd, 2008

Cut price airline Ryanair is fitting 14 of its 166 aircraft strong fleet with miniature mobile phone masts which will enable passengers to make and receive mobile phone calls and text messages via smartphones such as the BlackBerry and others, and could be available quite soon.

Mobile calls will be able to be made only by O2 and 3 network subscribers at present; however more are expected to sign up as soon as possible.

Calling charges will of course vary for O2’s in-flight service by destination and somewhere between £1.65 and £1.99 for making and receiving a call while texts should run at about 40 pence per message.
