New lithium iron phosphate batteries developed by Sony

There’s a new type of lithium ion battery on the block according to an article on telecompaper, which combines long life performance with high power via utilising olivine type lithium iron phosphate as its cathode material.

This new battery from Sony, who pioneered lithium ion battery usage, delivers an extended life of more than 4 times that of existing rechargeable lithium ion batteries that are used in conventional devices.

The new lithium iron phosphate batteries will be first use to power power-tools after which will gradually be brought into consumer products such as mobile phones, and promises to overcome such problems as battery overheating.
