Apparently Google has acquired VoIP startup Gizmo5 although neither firm has announced the acquisition, but apparently unnamed sources say the acquisition was finalised for $30 million in cold cash reports techcrunch.

Skype was originally looking to acquire Gizmo5 but apparently the deal fell through so Google was quick to step in and snatch the startup for themselves, which has apparently fuelled rumour that Google is planning on expanding their Google Voice service with true VoIP capabilities.

The addition is expected to transform Google Talk and Google Voice into a competitor against VoIP firms like Skype; however, as yet Google’s plans for Gizmo5 are unknown.
