Research in Motion and Motorola are reportedly leading in their respective market areas, but watch out as Apple are closing the gap fast.

The data which has come from ComScore shows information from September though to December and Motorola was the highest cell phone vendor in the US, followed by LG, Samsung and Nokia.

Looking at smartphones however, it was RIM research in Motion that took the lead followed by Apple. Microsoft, Palm and Google came behind Apple, and Google saw the largest gains of any smartphone OS on the market.

Text messaging is also on the increase according to the research again from ComScore, 61% of mobile users text messaged others in September which increased to 63.1 % by the end of December.
