Android Market Movies Rentals Blocked For Rooted Devices

If you are an Android user then you probably know the Google guys are bringing movie rentals to the Android Market, currently only available to Motorola Xoom tablets running Android 3.1 Honeycomb; however if you have rooted your Android device apparently movie rentals are blocked.

According to an article over on Engadget by way of Android Central, if a customer tries to rent a movie from the Android Market by using a rooted Android device they are faced with and error message that the Android Central guys discovered in a document on Google support.

The message states, “Failed to fetch license for [movie title] (error 49)” apparently rooted devices get this message because rooted devices aren’t supported due to “requirements related to copyright protection.”

Google is rolling out support for all Android 2.2 Froyo and up devices, but it would appear that if your have rooted your tablet or smartphone you wont be viewing any movie rentals from the Android Market for the foreseeable future.

Of course some tech genius will no doubt find a way round this in time, but as Android is supposed to be “Open” finding a way round shouldn’t be required as other movie rental services don’t have a problem with rooted devices.
