The ideal Android phone choice for idealists

Today we want to discuss Android smartphones and in particular the ideal Android phone choice for idealists. The world of smartphones is now so fast changing that it can be difficult to find a phone that would be perfect for everybody, as needs and requirements are different. However, we’d like to come up with an idea of what the perfect Android smartphone would be and would like to enlist the help of readers in a bid to find this out.

Last year when Samsung’s Galaxy S2 was released many thought it had just about everything an Android enthusiast could ask for. With a 1.2-GHz dual-core processor, 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, 8-megapixel rear camera, two-megapixel front-facing camera and running Android 2.3 Gingerbread this is a great example of how soon things can change in the mobile world. Those specs were pretty cutting-edge at the time and yet as we look to the upcoming Galaxy S3 we can see how quickly specs become dated.

Although specs for the Galaxy S3 are not yet confirmed it’s widely expected that it will have a 1.5GHz or 1.8GHz quad-core processor, 4.6-inch Super AMOLED Plus HD display, LTE connectivity, an increase to 2GB of RAM, 10 or even 12-megapixel rear camera and use Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a real step up from its predecessor. Indeed many consumers would be disappointed now if it turned up without a quad-core processor as other phones start to arrive featuring the more powerful new processors.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus also satisfied many people as it was the first launched with Android 4.0 ICS and also showed the trend towards larger displays with a 4.65-inch Super AMOLED screen, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 5-megapixel rear camera, 1.3-megapixel front-facer and1GB of RAM. The Galaxy Nexus only released at the end of last year and yet the HTC One X is set to take over its popularity. This has an even larger 4.7-inch HD display, 1.5GHz Tegra 3 quad-core processor (dual-core S4 processor for the U.S.), 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.3-megapixel front-facer and 1GB of RAM, also running on Android 4.0 ICS.

Meanwhile Motorola has recognized the extra battery demands of phones with such high specs and LTE connectivity and come up with the Droid Razr Maxx. This had virtually identical specs to the Droid Razr such as 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED Advanced display, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 8-megapixel rear camera 1GB of RAM and LTE connectivity but stepped up to a whopping 3300mAh battery. We’ve also heard rumblings of the Motorola Atrix 3, although this is very much in the early stages of the rumor mill. Nevertheless if it eventually arrives with rumored specs of a Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 4.3-inch HD display, 2GB of RAM, 10-megapixel rear camera, Android 4.0 ICS and a whopping 3300mAh battery, many will be oohing and aahing.

The phones we’ve mentioned above are only intended to give a representation of what is out there and what is forthcoming and of course there will be many we haven’t mentioned so apologies if your favorite handset isn’t among them. As you can see from these examples though, scope is extremely wide when it comes to narrowing down the ideal Android phone. What some will love will be an annoyance to others.

For example the trend is very much towards bigger displays but not everybody wants the bulk (or has big enough hands) to handle the larger phones easily. Another thing that is essential to some but not others is LTE connectivity while others drool over a certain type of display or resolution but are not so worried about storage. Photography enthusiasts might only be concerned with smartphone camera set-ups while for power users it could be all about the processor.

We’d like to hear your views on this and try to come up with a consensus of what would make the best ever Android smartphone. What specs and features would you like to see? If you could instruct a manufacturer right now, what list of requirements would you come up with? You may even have new smartphone ideas to suggest? Send us all your ideas about the ideal phone by using the comments box and let’s see what we can come up with!

I thought the Razr Maxx would herald a shift in manufacturers thinking about battery life. But if HTC is anything to go by, this hasn’t happened.

There isn’t a solution on the usage end, so get in the game and increase the battery capacity!

With all the ICS update issues coming to light I think we’re going to find that the only company that’s going to be able to release updates in a timely fashion, much like Apple, is google. I’m honestly thinking about not buying another tablet or phone unless it has a “made by google” or “Nexus” label.
