Flight companies say mobile phone ban is law overkill

The European Union has lifted restrictions for airline mobile phone use, thus opening the door for passengers to soon use their Blackberries and other smartphones during flight.

However over in the States, flights in the US and connecting to the US, mobile phone calls which have already been banned may well be outlawed by the Hang Up Act which is now up for vote before the House.

Providers of airplane mobile phone services travelled to Washington D.C. this week to try and get lawmakers to knock the bill down. According to OnAir and AeroMobile, say the FCC and FAA already have a ban in place so a law would be overkill.
