Verizon wireless big losers due to Apple iPhone

Apple (AAPL) iPhone 3G was the top-selling consumer smartphone in America this summer, well no surprise there, the iPhone 3G beating Palm’s Centro (PALM) and two RIM (RIMM) BlackBerry smartphones according to research company NPD group. What’s even more impressive about this is that the phone didn’t even launch until July 11 so we were almost halfway through the summer and the iPhone still was the number one consumer’s smartphone.

The iPhone 3G took a 24 percent slice of the US smartphone market from June through August, the iPhone is now the second best selling phone in the US, the number one slot goes to the Motorola RAZR, which is one of the cheaper phones on the market.

So who is the winners and losers in the Apple phenomenon, well AT&T are by far a winner being the excusive carrier, NPD research shows that around 30 percent on iPhone buyers switch their carrier, but who lost out, Verizon Wireless (VZ), a whopping 47 percent share of the 193 million subscribers, along with T-Mobile losing 24 percent to AT&T.

Having a quick look at the AT&T (T) stocks today at close they were down1.12 points or 4.17 percent at 25.74, Verizon’s (VZ) was down 1.07 points or 3.57 percent at 28.89.
